Such Pain-Need advice

Recommended Posts

I ate a piece of chicken tonight and it got stuck. I PB'd a few times and then the feeling of being stuck got worse. I don't think I actually have anything in there but it feels so swollen. I can't even swallow my spit. I keep throwing up and when I try to sleep it feels too uncomfortable to lie down. I will call my Dr in the morning but is there anything I should do tonight? I have tried to drink a little hot Water and I tried to crush an anti-inflamatory to try to reduce the swelling but I can't keep anything down.

Help ( I swear I will never eat chicken again)

Try doing the downward dog yoga pose, laying your back over the arm of a couch or chair to stretch your neck out. Sometimes that helps move it. Or you can try sipping a soda, the carbonation helps move stuff too...

I dont have problems with chicken, but thats the one meat I am religious about cutting really really small, and making sure if super moist before eating it.

Hope this helps!

If you have chewable papaya enzyme tabs you can try chewing some of them. They never work for me but some people swear by them.

Guzzling the soda really fast is supposed to work but beware apparently it comes up really fast too.

Once the blockage moves you should probably go back to liquids for a day or 2 as you will still be swollen and eating solid foods too quickly could cause further problems. If the blockage doesn't move you will have to go and see your Dr as otherwise you could dehydrate.

Don't swear off chicken. Try it again at some stage in the future but make sure it is really moist(dark meat is best), in some kind of sauce, small bites and chew REALLY well. Just because it has caused you a problem today doesn't mean it will do the same again next time.

Hope you feel better soon.

so scary...

during a pre-op appt, i once asked my doctor about the whole getting stuck thing. i envisioned it being stuck so you couldn't breathe. he said, no, you can always breathe. but then he said, "it won't kill you, but the pain could be so bad you might wish you were dead." Nice, huh?

but in a way, i hope you're comforted to know that even though it's horrible, it's kinda normal....

please update tomorrow and let us know how you're feeling.

I mananged to go to sleep soon after I posted. I had thought I might not sleep and I envisioned myself being up all night not being able to swallow.

I feel better this morning and I am going to have something hot to drink. I just took a little sip of Water and it went down with a bit of a gurgle so I know I am clear but a bit swollen (probably very swollen). I will stay on liquids today and will call my Dr. if I can't drink them. I have had this problem once before but it was not as bad as last nigt. I have told myself to stick to dark meat chicken but the food arrived form the new asian place and it tasted so good that I forgot my own rule.

Forward 2 steps back 1. I am learning.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
