Wow - is this great for those of us Feb. 2010 to read. Thank you so very much.

Joyce in Kansas City

I thought I'd respond because I am a Feb09 bandster! Yes, I am hitting my anniversary and just thought I'd give some of my (hopefully) sage advice. First, this is not magic. I know your doctor told you that, but it is true. On the other hand, it is the best choice I ever made. I can only say it is though I was injected with self control! Some things are different, as there are foods I just can't eat (pizza, most meat, bananas), on the other hand, who cares about meat when I can now go buy a size 10 pair of jeans!!! ( I thought they were mis-sized, but I have two pairs from different designers, so it must be true!)I never thought I could go out to dinner and leave over two thirds of a meal. So now that I can, I feel like I am free to eat without any guilt. I can't eat much, but I thoroughly enjoy whatever I have. I have lost 70 pounds and now weigh the least amount of my entire adult life. My ultimate goal is a size 6 (I started at size 20), or 30 more pounds, whichever is first! I feel awesome, and think this was the best choice I could have made for my mental and physical health. Good luck to all of you!

One more day of everythign for me then Friday is band day! I have been so busy at work I can hardly believe how fast the week flew by. I will have a very full day tomorrow as well, so that will keep my mind occupied. I think I have everything I need for post op, but I am going to check just in case. Biggest worry is the kids--like they are not old enough to fend for themselves DS 18 Sr. in HS, and DD 14 Freshman in HS--since DH is with me they will have no transport back up, etc.

Yesterday I checked in the hospital at 5:30am and didn't get called back until 10:30am. I waited in the back until 12:00pm, but finally I was in surgery and wow I can't believe I did it! I was allowed to leave the hospital yesterday if I was feeling good so I ended up getting home at 8:30pm. What a long day! My hubby was grumpy through all the waiting so early in the day I sent him to my moms for a nap, he was alot happier when he came back. I felt really well yesterday, I was able to burp if I walked around so I did lots of walking. Since I am home now I had to wake myself up every three hours for a walk and drink and pee, dr.s orders. Today I am sore, like I have been in a car accident, everything hurts, achey pain. The soreness in my chest feels alot like plurasy and it is hard to remember to take deep breaths so my hubby keeps reminding me. But seriously this is not bad at all, I thought it would be alot worse. The meds help, i.e. my rambling, and walking makes me feel better. To all you who are about to go into surgery: Be Nice to the anesthesiologist he/she is very important and they can make things alot easier. Good Luck everyone!:rolleyes2:

Hey guys!! This was hard to find!

I'm such a late joiner, I decided I should look into the surgery again last Friday, I had an appointment with the doc on Monday, and my surgery is this Saturday!! I dont have a pre-op diet, but I dropped meals for Breakfast and lunch, and have been having for Soup instead, trying to loose weight even if I wasnt getting the surgery.

#1. Surgery date? Feb. 13, 2010

#2. State you live in? South Korea

#3. Doctor/Surgery Center? Yedian Clinic (found it through another lapbandtalk member!)

#4. Insurance or self pay? Self pay, $7000

#5. Age and height 25/5'7

#6. Current weight and goal weight? 231/130? even 50lbs would be great!!

#7. What was your deciding factor for having this surgery? Having trouble getting pregnant again, since I havent lost any weight that I gained from my first pregnancy, and I think weight could be a factor. Dont feel good about myself, and can see myself following my mums footsteps, being fat for life. I also want to be sexy again for my husband, and be an active mum to my 2 year old son.

Do you have the support of family and friends? After a year since I first mentioned it, and losing weight only to gain it back again, my husband is on board. I told my mum, and shes supportive, but worried. She's considered it for herself, but is scared of surgery, and WHEN I succeed, I plan to make sure she gets it too.

#8. Concerns and questions? Fill Needles!!

Feeling better and better every day. Early mornings are the best - I feel normal for awhile and then become tired as the morning progresses.

Still having shoulder pain! When will it go away?!? If it wasn't for the chest pressure and shoulder pain it wouldn't be half as bad. The stomache area only hurts when I'm getting up and down.

Good luck all and remember.......after the first couple of days it really does start to feel better .....

Sandman if you are worried about your energy level at work. You will do fine on the Optifast at work. I have been on it for 5 weeks and I am doing fine at work. I have a pretty physical job.

I got banded on Feb 4th, and my first thought when recovering was "I actually wanted this surgery?!". Every day has gotten MUCH better and now that it's a full week, I feel almost 100% "normal" again. A few things I would suggest for others looking forward to the surgery:

-Get your pain prescription filled in advance "just in case"

-After surgery, walk walk walk!

-Be prepared to see a 1-5 lbs weight GAIN after surgery (due to the IV's). Don't despair. Perfectly normal

-Bring really loose fitting pants to the hospital-you'll be "inflated" during surgery and it takes a few days to a few weeks for the puffiness to go down.

-Stay positive!

We all know it's absolutely the right decision, and change is hard. It's nice knowing that we really are all in this together and we will succeed! I'm grateful to everyone who posts their experiences, successes, trials and tribulations~

So excited for this new phase of my life!

Yes, Darlyne I am still feeling bloating up on top. I had my surgery on the 2nd. I'm feeling about 98% normal, still a Little sore in the large insertion, but the small ones are almost healed:ohmy:. Just feeling helpless, I'm on Long island NY and we got hit with snow yesterday and I couldn't do anything:sad: shovel and stuff. and house work is the other thing, I just want to be able to do all of it... I'm feeling better, but afraid to hurt myself:sad:

Take it easy.... it will be there when you feel better

Maybe a neighbor/relative/friend could do the shoveling?

Good luck!

#1. Surgery date? Feb. 5, 2010

#2. State you live in? New York

#3. Doctor/Surgery Center? Dr. O'Malley Highland Bariatric Center

#4. Insurance or self pay? Insurance

#5. Age and height 38 years, 5 foot, 1 inch tall.

#6. Current weight and goal weight? currently 214 lbs, goal weight would be 115 but I'm taking 10 lbs at a time!!!

#7. What was your deciding factor for having this surgery? My health is poor and its mainly due to high blood pressure, asthma, fibromyalgia, pre-diabetes all of which could be improved through weight loss. Looking at my 3 kids I realized I need to live a long time yet, but at the rate I was going I would have been dead by 50.

Do you have the support of family and friends? My family is a little skeptical because they have heard horror stories of band slippage etc. My friends are more supportive.

#8. Concerns and questions? Getting through this recovery phase is hell, for real. I didn't think it would be this bad. I am suddenly freaked out by maybe never eating pop corn again (LOL). I am on the prowl for recipes for the mushy stage, and it helps a lot because instead of craving popcorn and other stuff I cant have, I am craving some of the yummy recipes I will try next week!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
