Post surgical Infection..HELP!!

Recommended Posts

So I had LAP-BAND® on Tuesday 12/8/09. Speedy recovery except my right forearm. It is swollen, red, has fever in it and is sore. My temp is normal 98.7. I'm going to my doctor first thing tomorrow morning. IV was placed near thumb in right hand.

Has anyone heard of this type of infection or had similar pain/redness/swelling in other parts of their body after LAP-BAND®?

It's not a "surgical site" infection so I don't know what to think about it.

Sounds like an infection from the IV and not with the Lap-Band. It sounds like some kind of either infection or perhaps an allergic reaction to something? I assume your doctor will give you some antibiotics to take in liquid form. If you're not running a fever, it's good, hopefully you caught it in time! Good luck!

You could have a number of things wrong with your arm with the symptoms you are describing. You could have an infection, although I would think you would be running a fever. You could have a clot from the where the IV was taken out. Try not to massage your arm at the site. If it is a clot you don't want to dislodge it. You could be having just some localized irritation from the IV. Or you could have had some infiltration of the IV Fluid into the tissue around the IV but you should have noticed that before the IV was taken out. In any case, I would call the doctor and let him/her know what's going on. There shouldn't be any problem with putting a warm, not hot compress lightly on the area if that provides some comfort.

Let us know what the doctor says.

Turns out it was an infection downstream from where the IV was placed got some antibiotics and they said I should be fine. To relieve any pain alternate cold and warm compresses..i was just so worried now I'm relieved. Going back to work tomorrow!!

sounds like phlebitis. My sister has the same thing from an IV years ago. her arm is still red to this day. have it checked anyway. doesn't seem to be related to the lapband.

good luck

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
