Approved and ready for Surgery

Recommended Posts

Today, I received the call that I had been approved by my insurance for the LB procedure. I am so happy that it wasn't a battle with my insurance company (Cigna) but now I am a little nervous about the change that is coming. I know that I can make the necessary changes in my personal life to make this a success and I guess it is just pre-op nerves but it is still difficult to think how big of a change this is in my life. I guess my biggest challenges are going to be learning to chew my food completely and learning how to eat without drinking fluids...If anyone could give me some pre-op suggestions and experiences...I sure would appreciate it. My surgery is scheduled for January 20th, 2010...which is right around the corner...Thanks in advance!

Some of the changes will be easier then you think others not so much. I was always the guy at work that "Had to have a diet coke with my lunch" now not so much. I do struggle with chewing and smaller bites.

I too like to have that diet drink each day but don't feel like it will be the hardest thing...Like you, chewing and smaller bites are my challenge. I am sure that I will learn this adjustments and I will be in this forum asking many questions. I appreciate your input

Once my surgery was approved, I started a 1,000 calorie regiment. Also, 3 weeks before surgery I had to go on a liquid Protein diet. I could have 7 of these drinks a day. Each was 110 calories and 17 grams of Protein. I really was satisfied. Pushing the pre-op diet I lost 50 lbs and post op I lost 70 lbs. ( surgery was 5/11/09) I'm now on a maintenance mode.

Remember - this is a life changing journey not a diet. You'll do fine. It's ok to be nervous. I was . I think we all were. The biggest challenge has been and remains to chew, chew and chew......AND EAT SLOWLY.....

I think the most difficult part to the process was the month after surgery. They call this bandster hell. You are hungry and could only have liquids following surgery( for 2 weeks) followed by 2 weeks of soft foods. You'll get past this without a problem. Once you start getting fills and feel restriction, you'll feel great.........while losing weight.

ps - immediately after surgery, for a few days or so, you may have bad gas pains. Keep Gas - X strips handy...THEY WORK GREAT to relieve the pressure..........

Hope this helps. Any ??, send me a note........GOOD LUCK !!

Until smaller bites becomes more of a habit, try cutting your meat into bites about the size of a nickel....all before you start eating. Then you don't have to worry that the bite is too big.

To slow down, go back to the old diet thing about putting your fork or spoon down after you put the bite in your mouth and don't pick it back up until you've chewed your bite and swallowed it. If I hold onto my utensil, I sometimes rush the next bite.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
