over eating prior to surgery

Recommended Posts

Has anyone found themselves totally pigging out before surgery?? It seems like lately i keep eating and eating and i just can't stop..I know its psychological..it HAS to be...I don't want to say what i've been eating and where, but one thing is for sure...it's like i've been starving forever.

I don't know when my surgery is. I have to wait for the results of the stress~test.

My dr actually told me to eat whatever and whenever I wanted prior to the week of liquids! He said it's better than getting to the week of liquids and saying ohh I wish I had eaten this or that.

Between the time of my first PCP appointment and my first appointment with my nutritionist, I think I ate everything I could get my hands on and gained 4 pounds in a month. After that appointment with the nutritionist, I was told to either maintain or lose weight, but not gain because then I would have to see the nutritionist again. I am still kinda eating everything in sight, but I started exercising 4-5 days a week. I went for my surgery consultation today and I lost 4 pounds! I was so surprised! I agree with you, I do think it is psychological, because I keep thinking I need to enjoy things now that I won't be able to eat after surgery, but with working out consistantly now, I don't feel as guilty about it.

I'm in the same boat as you! This is familiar behaviour to me.

Whenever I knew I was going to begin a diet, I would eat like it was my last meal(s) for days or weeks before. Knowing that I am preparing for band surgery I've fallen into this familiar pattern again.

My surgeon told me that he wanted me to lose 5 lbs before I see him again. I've gained 7. I don't know what he's going to say, but I hope this won't stop the surgery. I NEED the surgery to help me control exactly this type of behaviour.

I figure I will probably lose at LEAST 5-10 lbs on the 10 day all liquid diet. Won't that do the trick?

I sort of agree ... best to get this out of your system! Once the doc puts you on the pre-op diet, you need to make every effort to stick to it because the purpose of the pre-op diet is to shrink your liver so that the doctor has adequate room in which to work when he does your surgery. A poster that I haven't seen anything from lately (Restless Monkey) went for surgery the FIRST time and woke up with no band because she had not stuck to her pre-op diet and her liver was simply in the way! She had to go home do the pre-op diet and come back for surgery a few weeks later.

A cautionary story, I guess...but, like I said, that would mean it's best to get this out of your system now. And, please, remember this: You are not giving up the food you love for the rest of your life; you're just not going to be able to eat the portions that put you into the obese category that you're in. So don't act like it's the last supper!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
