Too Tight...How Long Should I Wait to Get an Unfill?

Recommended Posts

I went in two days ago to get a small fill because I wasn't feeling much restriction.

My surgeon doesn't want to fill me too fast, so he suggested adding .5-1 cc at a time. I now have a total of around 5 ccs.

After my fill I was able to drink fine and even had a slice of deli chicken that went down slowly, but fine.

However, I haven't been able to eat (or barely drink) anything since then. I realize I am probably having a swelling response. I am afraid to go and get an un-fill only to have no restriction again. Ugh. I just don't know what to do!

How long should I wait to see if the swelling goes down? Any personal experiences are greatly appreciated. THANKS SO MUCH!!!

I'm sure you are having a swelling response! My surgeon has me do 2 days of liquids after a fill. I recommend you try doing at least 1 day of liquids to try and reduce the swelling around the band maybe even 2 days before making the decision to have an unfill. My guess is you will be fine after the liquid days.

I was filled too tight last month and it was miserable. Because of the cost and distance to my surgeon I tried to do liquids for a couple of extra days before deciding to spend another 10 hours in the car to pay and have an unfill. The nurse told me after the unfill that I would be back within 3 weeks for another fill and sure enough I am headed back to Mexico tomorrow for a fill.

I think you'll find that you are reacting to that slice of deli chicken. It might have gone down easily at the time, but you now have restriction and it's not going through the band easily now. My surgeon (and most surgeons that I have heard about) says to do liquids only for the rest of the day of a fill (creamed Soups are good - nutritious and filling and tastier than Protein drinks), do mushies on the next day and back to solid foods on Day 3. On the first couple of fills, when you don't really have much restriction yet, you might not have seen the necessity for this and so may have forgotten that advice but this time round, the restriction has kicked in and that's what you're feeling.

If you've been getting stuck and PBing since the fill, give yourself 2 days on liquids then a day on mushies. If you can't go back to solids on day 4, get 0.25 taken out.

I just had this experience. Plus a cold. My surgeon says 2 days of liquids and 2 days of mushies then solid. However by day 2 i knew I couldn't go to mushies yet. I was getting foaming and oversalivating (prolonged). The foaming was thin and not large in volume like tbspns. In general its not an emergency if you are able to drink liquids and keep them down if you can't you need an UNFILL so you don't dehydrate. I stayed on THIN liquids for 3 full days then went to mushies. The whole time I was having this foaming issue. Was on the phone with NYU; they felt it was due to the cold and if I can ride it out on mushies till the cold went away (I was really against getting an unfill because we went aggressive this month for a reason).

Anyway a few tips:

Advil (liquid/childrens helps get swelling down); so do hot fluids.

Listen to your body you really should be only liquids and then mushies. If you really don't want an unfil stay on those things longer (call your doctor).

For me I've been better and better everyday. Today I had dark meat chicken and no problems (aside from the post nasal drip foaming).

My doc recommended liquids for 24 hours after a fill in case there's swelling.

I'd go back to liquids - Water, Protein shakes, clear/creamy Soups - for a day or two and then start eating easily digestible solids. The info I was given after surgery says that chicken is one of the more difficult meats because it's drier so maybe scrambled eggs, fish, etc.?

If, after that, you're still having problems, I'd call your doc but look at this time as a plus because it will have an impact on the weight you lose right now.

I also have a cold and have wondered if all this extra...well, yucky stuff going down has contributed to feeling too tight. I have A LOT of yucky stuff.

Thanks so much guys for sharing your experiences! I am going to do liquids today and tomorrow and mushies on Sunday and see how I feel on Monday before calling my doctor.

You guys rock!!!!! Thanks for making me feel better. :rolleyes2:

Yea he told me to stay on mushies till the cold goes - I've been on semi solids like fish; and I had Indian the chopped ground lamb over rice (today my prob was that i kept eating). Another thing I have found helps have you tried the netti pot or saltaire rinse (its kinda gross but it really helps get rid of the yucky stuff) and i think it helps out your sinuses. I think its been keeping this at bay and making it better. They always say w/ colds to start your day w/ hot liquids. BTW are you getting the foaming also? This is thin foaming that I've been getting like a baby that burps, and salivating. I have found that hours after I have eaten I can get this and again drinking the hot helps (they think that is the post nasal drip).

Call your doctor anyway they were great when I called - I started by saying I would rather not get an unfill.... he almost wanted me in for an unfill until he heard about the cold. On the plus side I dropped a lot of weight :w00t:

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
