Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Fly for 1.5 hrs vs. drive for 8 hrs

Recommended Posts

Which would you do after surgery? I live in Nebraska, so I can fly to Denver from Omaha for about 1 1/2 hours, or I can drive for about 8. My surgery is scheduled for March 11th, so I might have weather to consider, too.

I've had some people tell me to drive, because then I can stop and such whenever I want. I've had others tell me to fly, because a bumpy 8 hour ride would be miserable.

What should I do?

If it were me, I would fly, just because it is shorter, you get home faster. Be sure to take your pain meds before, either way...

I haven't had surgery yet, so I can't tell you which I would have preferred, but please keep in mind that there is so much more involved with air travel than just flight time.

You need to take into account time to get to the airport, check in and check your baggage (if you have any), time to get through security and get to the gate. After the flight, you need to get your bag (again, if you checked one) and get to your destination. Then, you have to do it all over again to get home. All this is based on everything running on time.

I live in Chicago and it is a 45 minute flight to Detroit. With all the other stuff tacked on, it ends up being a 4 1/2 hr. ordeal to fly. I can drive to Detroit in 4 1/2 hrs.

Wishing you the best of luck no matter what you decide-

Fly, you want to get to your bed ASAP & without the bumps in the road.

I drove from LA to TJ (2.5hr drive). I had the option of staying in a hotel but I went home after.

Your also gonna need to get up & walk the gas off every hour... Wouldn't you prefer doing that at home opposed to the side of the road?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
