Benefiber anyone?

Recommended Posts

Yes it's the question no one wants to talk about. Do you have problems with bowel movements? I have to say prior to surgery I'd go just about every day. Since surgery I've only gone I think 3 times. Not good! I would have to take ex-lax to make myself go. So I bought Benefiber yesterday and started adding it to my Protein Shakes. Has anyone else had this problem? :wink2::wink2:

Actually I have the opposite problem. I'm having a bm 3 or 4 times a day. Seems weird, I sometimes wonder if it is the gummy vitamins I am taking? Right after surgery I was constipated but took Milk of Magnesia one time and after that - woooo boy, I'm going like crazy and that was 3 months ago! Wonder if anyone else is having these problems.

On the advice of a friend who was banded 12 months before me, I started taking Benefibre as soon as I got home from hospital and continued with it right up to the stage where I could eat normal food. I never had any problems with Constipation and I think that was due to the fibre. So I would say that you are doing the right thing.

Constipation was the side effect I didn't know about prior to surgery and wow did I suffer! I thought a trip to the Er was the next step. I took Miralax and nothing happened. I finally took Milk of Magnesia (good 'ole MOM) and success! Now I take 100mg of Colace every day and things are almost normal. I also stay aware of how long in between to see if I need to do anything else, but nothing is as easy as it was before surgery.

Good Luck!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
