Choosing a surgeon

Recommended Posts

Before you make that final decision on who your surgeon will be, find out what their policy is on giving fills. Read enough posts on enough forums and you'll find that some doctors have a policy cut in stone and won't deviate from it no matter how hungry you are or whether you can (and still are) eating to excess. Others work with you and will give you a fill if there is no restriction and/or you are hungry and/or still able to eat to excess.

There are too many doctors out there who still don't understand what we're dealing with. They seem to think the band is a placebo...stick it in and we should somehow miraculously be able to stick to a diet, lose weight and keep it off. Others tell their patients that they need to go on a 'diet'.

I'm not saying a 'diet' is bad and if you want to do the whole Weight Watchers and gym thing, more power to you...but the band was designed to deal with excessive eating so common sense says that if you're used to eating 5000+ calories a day and the band (along with making good food choices) keeps your calories at 1000-2000 a day, you're going to lose weight.

Interview several surgeons. I interviewed 6 or 7 before making my choice...and I'm exceedingly happy with that choice.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
