Too fat to graduate

Recommended Posts

OMG like fat people haven't had it hard enough. This ticks me off

College's too-fat-to-graduate rule under fire - CNN.com

How about a class for skinny people to put on weight or smokers to quit or alcoholics to stop drinking.

Fat is the just the next target to pick on - they don't realize that we've been picked on and we have rage built up to fight back.

Being overweight is one's on struggle - a college degree shouldn't be based on looks.

The title is rather deceptive to the goal of the actual program. Many colleges require in the core-recrequisite that students, usually ALL students, complete a health and fitness course to graduate. The only way this program differs is that it takes BMI into account, not a bad idea at all. Some students really don't need the course, and for some it can change thier relationship with food and thier bodies.

The heading is meant to be offensive so you read the article, but the message ("The intention is to spread the message that people in school, including high school and middle school, need more physical activity") isn't a negative one.

I agree with you 65DueceCoupe

This college has a bad thing going here and I hope the students and city rise up against them. It seems that picking on fat people is socially acceptable in the media, etc but of course you can't say anything about someone's religion, race or sex... that would be not acceptable at all.... There is a double standard here that needs to be addressed.. just my two pennies..

I know the article seems harsh, but reality is much worse. What happens to young graduates that are being discrimated against in the work force because of their weight?

I think this course is no different then clothing and makeup consultants. It is meant to open your eyes and show you another way.

I think three hours a week is a reasonable amount of time and graduating from the class only means seriousness on the part of the student.

Although weightloss can be difficult, its still not rocket science. A little education goes a long way.

It's not fair to single out people who are overweight. If they made everyone take it, I could understand. In fact, my employer is looking at charging overweight people more for health insurance premiums...not fair. They already will start charging smokers more starting 2010...I'm not even a smoker but I still think it's unfair.

Now that we're moving closer and closer to socialized medicine in the US it only makes sense that they will work to demonize and ostracize obese people. They are working to "shame" us out of our fatness. Why? Because "they" say the cost of obesity is breaking the healthcare system. Yes, folks -- now a fatty who busts his/her butt working, pays $20k+ a year in taxes and subscribes to his/her own health insurance is lower on the totem pole than a homeless street person.

Also notice how all of a sudden you only need to get Pap smears every three years and mammograms are unnecessary for those under age 50? Gotta cut costs somewhere -- let's start with the fatties and the females.

What a load of hogwash:

"We, as educators, must tell students when we believe, in our heart of hearts, when certain factors, certain behaviors, attitudes, whatever, are going to hinder that student from achieving and maximizing their life goals," (James DeBoy) said.

If they are so concerned about it -- why don't they address this problem during K-12? You know, while "we the taxpayers" are footing the bill for the education.

Gee -- I wonder what their thoughts are regarding the "beautiful butterflies" who are drinking their brains out every Friday and Saturday night, fornicating indiscriminately and posting raunchy photos of themselves on Facebook? Aww shucks, that's not destructive behavior -- that's a rite of passage...:w00t:

I quit reading after the second paragraph. It is a horrible program no matter what the rest of the article says. It is discriminatory that only those with a BMI over 30 have to take this course.

I may be all for it if it were all students.

"If they are so concerned about it -- why don't they address this problem during K-12? You know, while "we the taxpayers" are footing the bill for the education." Well, they do. Gym is mandatory K-12 and health classes are required in the core rec. Most colleges don't simply target those who are obese. At my college, it was mandatory for everyone.

And I have never heard a professor say, even in casual conversation, that drinking to excess and posting pictures about it is a rite of passage. We have whole programs here to help the students stay away from alcohol and how to manage it and stress properly. They'd get reported in a heartbeat.

Taking an extra gym class in college did not kill me. It was easy credit and got me moving, which is always good because I think exercise is a pain in the ass. Having it be mandatory helped me lose weight. I don't know, but out of all the problems going on, this isn't one of my concerns. Maybe when they start asking for BMIs during the application process to screen out the fat kids... then I'll be on board, haha!

Some people, no matter how hard you exercise, cannot get the weight off. I know I was one of them. I rode my bike everyday and I didn't lose a pound. It wasn't until I got banded and cut my portions in half that I could lower my BMI at ALL.

From what I am reading from this program, it's just to shame the students who are heavier. It's not going to make anyone lighter or fitter. That take a drastic lifestyle change, not a 3 hour class. Things like this make me angry : /

I didn't read the article but this is a form of discrimination. Just because something is good for someone does not make it less discriminatory. It would be good if we could put racists and bigots in intolerance classes but we don't. If a school is going to have intolerance classes everyone must attend. And if the school is actually worried about health everyone would take the class I know i slew of unhealthy people with a BMI under 30.

Now that we're moving closer and closer to socialized medicine in the US ...

That is not going to happen. It is just the current hot political topic. There are too many smart, working people in this country to let it happen.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
