When the surgeon and the nutritionist don't agree

Recommended Posts

Who do you listen to when the surgeon and the nutritionist do not agree on the pre-op diet?

The surgeon. They are the one that's operating on you so I would want to make sure that i followed their advice.

surgeon. both pre-op and post-op. there was a lot of discussion at the support group down here a couple weeks ago about how even the nutritionists in the same office serving the same patients don't agree among themselves.

the surgeon is "responsible" for the gadget. he is king. lol.

For the post op diet - I'd definitely rely on the surgeon's advice.

for all else, the nutritionist. But even then, I'd make my own decisions based on my own beliefs becuase being a nutritionist is a lot like being a personal trainer - you work according to your own beliefs and those are based only really on current trends, not absolute medical proof that what they advise is best. Ten years from now, their advice will probaby be outdated. Anything works if you do it consistently - low carb, low fat, low calorie, etc.

Thank for your repsonses, they make a lot of sense.

I was a bit surprised by the conflicting information from the surgeon and the nutritionist. I plan to speak with the surgeon about it when I see him again to schedule surgery.

Thanks again!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
