What does restriction feel like?

Recommended Posts

I know this sounds like a silly question, but I am really looking to figure out WTH is going on with me.

So, restriction...is it something you all feel in your stomach or is it higher, like in your chest? I recall someone at support group mentioning that full feels different to her now, but I have no clue what that means LOL. I am in the final days of the soft stage and moving onto lifetime on Wednesday (day 43--wow! never thought I'd see the day!)

Ever since Thursday, I have been getting a very weird feeling. It's not pain, it is uncomfortable, and it comes and goes. Nothing in particular triggers it, it can be an hour after I've eaten, when I'm eating, just any old time.

I get this weird feeling sometimes in my chest area like I almost can't breathe and it gets intense if I'm yawning or breathing in at that time. Again, it doesn't hurt, but it's very uncomfortable and it's not something that's constant.

I posted before about a "lump" in my throat and I apologize for any confusion. I don't have an actual lump in my throat from the anesthesia tube, as I'm almost 6 weeks post op. This crazy feeling just started out of nowhere and nothing in particular triggers it. I'm not sure if it's an indicator of something major or if it can just wait until I see my surgeon on 12/8 (when we discuss if I need to get my first fill). I have been "one of those" who can eat anything and feels no different than before I was banded. No pbing, no vomiting, nothing!

I'm so confused right now that I don't have a clue what full truly feels like or why this feeling is happening all of a sudden. I'm just hoping that someone can give me some ideas. I've been all over the internet this weekend trying to find anything remotely close to what I'm having and I must be crazy because I can't find a darn thing!

I hope someone has an idea! This is all so strange to be happening now! I just hope there's nothing wrong!

Restriction for me is feeling like I have eaten a very large meal when in reality I have only eaten about 1/2 cup of food. I have very good restriction right now. When I'm eating and I am full, I can not take one more bite. I have learned (the hard way) ,that after I get to my full point, if I take even one more bite I will be very uncomfortable. Good restriction is when I eat my small meal it fills my pouch and takes hours to go through to the bottom part of my stomach. I do not feel hungry until the next meal time. Sometimes I do get a little head hunger.

I'm only 2 weeks out from surgery and I'm currently on the soft foods stage. (My doctor told me to move up to that because of the weightloss and I was ready for it) I have to tell you that what I feel is kind of like a lump in the throat. You know when you feel like you're going to burp but just can't quite get it out? That's kind of what I feel. On 2 occasions I overate or ate the wrong type of food and it just felt like it was stuck. I didnt' feel that I was nausiated but just that it was stuck and I needed to get it out by throwing up.

I hope this helps a little.

For me after banding when I feel full it is actually not a gut full feeling but higher up, like around my Breast section of chest, it feels different too. More like a pressure, on my chest, and also when I feel full it seems harder to swallow.

For me, the restriction is a full sensation that tells me to stop right there. If I keep going I get over full, uncomfortable and it feels like my cup runith over. I guess the lump sensation you were talking about, but more over like I have food waiting in my esophagus to go into my stomach. Still learning this lesson though.

Great question. I was about to ask myself. I was suppose to get my first fill yesterday but do an emergency of a friend I will get it tomorrow morning and I'm nervous. I feel restriction now to a small degree which is how I've lost 15 pounds (that and running) w/o any fills.

I have the same thing I believe. I posted on it earlier but I think my description made no sense. The 'lump in the throat' verbage did it for me. I know there is nothing there but that is the best wording to describe this feeling. I have had it for the last 2 weeks. Its quite maddening as there is nothing you can do to make it go away, sometimes it goes on its own and then it just pops up whenever it wants to again. I see my doctor about it today. I will let you know what they say.

I am 2 1/2 months post op, have only had one fill, 3cc, but I have very good restriction, 3/4 to 1 cup of food fills me up and I have never PB, or vomited. (I hope I never do.) I got VERY tight with my last period and that is when it started. When I talked to are head band person on the phone she said maybe it is reflux at night causing inflammation in the esophagus. Sad if that is the case because I used to have reflux all the time and it was GONE with my banding. Anyway, again, I will let you know what they say.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
