Help! Need a diet

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I am 2 1/2 months into my 6 month required diet for insurance and I have to lose 5% of my body weight to qualify for surgery...this is about 16 lbs. So far I havent lost any. I dont know what to do for a diet. If I could diet and lose weight I wouldnt be in this situation. My preop diet will consist of a regular diet just NO carbs at all. Should I do this?

1 week ago Ive started exercising 30min a day (Biggest Loser Wii game) and so far Ive lost 0.

Any suggestions?

TIA

Is this an insurance requirement...or the doctors? If the doctors, I'd find another doctor. If the insurance company, sorry to hear they still don't get it.

However, I lost 70 lbs by going low carb. The only carbs I ate were in the form of green vegies. The plus side was that I could have bacon, butter and real oil on my salads.

Some would say 'oooh...unhealthy', but my cholesterol levels actually improved and once I got the carbs out of my system (about 1-1/2 weeks), I actually had to remind myself to eat because I wasn't craving anymore.

I second the low carb suggestion. I lost 60 lbs in about 4 months on one, although I was (obviously) unable to keep it off.

I also lost a ton (23 lbs) on my two-week pre-op diet of 3 Protein shakes per day. It sucked, but it worked.

Good luck - that requirement sucks!

Amy

Just eat the same things you are eating now. Just less of it.

Fill up your plate as usual, then throw 25% of everything in the trash or down the drain.

Or use a much smaller plate and you won't fit as much.

It sounds stupid but it is working for me.

Also, get out and walk and drink loads of Water every day.

For me, there were 2 things that REALLY helped. One was cutting my carbs. My dietician recommended 165 carbs a day and 1500 calories. It was harder for me than I thought! The other thing that REALLY REALLY helped, was being able to SEE what I was eating. I joined a website called Sparkpeople.com and they have a nutrition and fitness log on there. You go in and plug in what you ate and it calculates everything for you. I track calories, carbs, fat and Protein. It REALLY helped me make sure that I got in my required protein for the day. There's other stuff on there too, but, the most important thing, to me, was the nutrition tracker. You'd be amazed. Something you THINK is healthy may not be and you can break it down by the numbers. The ONLY thing you may need to watch is that it will calculaate what calories and carbs you should have a day, but, it may vary from what your dietician says (mine did, when I would log a new weight, I had to adjust the calories and carbs, but, SO wirth it!)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
