Flying on Saturday and scared

Recommended Posts

I am flying to Florida from Arizona on Saturday. I have read about of lot of people having problems flying and there band getting to tight. Is there anyone out there who has flown and not had any problems? Or you did something to make it easier?

I have flown at least 25 times since my surgery date 3 years ago. I NEVER have had an issue not one! I pack a band friendly snack incase i get hungry. I have read other posts where folks say they do get tighter in flight, perhaps it is an individual thing. My last flight was 2 months ago and my band is filled almost to max and still i felt no different at all.

I'm with KelinTx on this one. I have flown numerous times since I was banded 3 years ago and have never had problems. I'm super tight right now and flew a few weeks ago, no issues at all.

I dont have issues with flying. The most I could say is that I am "unhungry" for a day or two after, which is, to me, not a problem at all!

i flew twice in oct and i had no issues. i just sipped on Water throughout the flight. i was not as hungry either right after the flights. i waited an hour after landing before i ate anything and it was soft/mushy. once i held that down ok i started back on regular foods.

Just prepare to feel some extra restriction, but don't count on it. Prepare by not eating solid food two hours prior to takeoff, but stay very well hydrated pre-flight, during your flight, and post flight. And as daqui suggested, wait an hour after your flight to eat, start with a soft food, then go to regular food if you don't feel any discomfort. With all that being said, I have flown several times since being banded without experiencing any extra restriction from my band. I can't tell any difference whatsoever.

I have flown several times and had absolutely no change in the band. My girlfriend has flown also and she didnt have any change in her band. If anything..some people say tension or nerves make their bands tight..but I havent experienced that either. So dont worry about it!!!

I flew from Memphis to Sac and then back again. No problems, felt a little tighter but no worries or problems. I just wasn't as hungry as usual, but I still ate.

I fly a great deal and the only time my band has any reaction is when I am under a great deal of stress or worry.

I normally eat as slowly making sure to chew and wait between bites to make sure.

And for emergency I make sure the barf bag is close by but I have never had to use it.

My longest flight was twelve hours to the Philippines and I ate three times on the plane and no issues.

Puddle jumper flights or quickies like Houston to Corpus Christi don't pose much of a problem, as they don't reach a very high altitude. But on long flights that cruise at 30,000 ft. (+), I end up being tight for a day or so after landing. I usually have to ease back into eating and usually do smoothies or Protein Drink for the first 12 hours or so. Then I'm fine. If I try to eat to soon, I'll find myself in the bathroom with PB hell. I also take the "barf bags" off the plane in my purse. I've been in the rent car after a flight, and there was no place to stop. Sure came in handy!!!

I am flying on Wed and asked my fill dr about this. She explained that you are more likely to have a problem if there is air in your band (like soon after surgery) as air can swell and cause it to tighten. The saline does not swell so it should not cause a problem if you have fills in your band

She also said that if the worst came to the worst and I did tighten up that it would loosen again on the ground so not to worry. That it is possible to go for 14hrs without liquid. Horrible thought.

So I'm still scared of flying but not from a band point of view. Its just so long, cramped, boring and just generally nerve wracking!

I am not banded yet. So, I can't speak from personal experience but I would not worry about it considering how many people fly to Mexico to get banded and then fly back a day or so later.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
