I am beyond disgusted right now. I am considering having this stupid thing taken the heck outta me! I was doing really well - lost 7.2lbs first week, 5.3lbs second week. I was banded on 11/10. So, I realize it's bad to keep getting on the scale, but I can't help it. So this week, I have been all over the place - as much as up 2-4lbs. As of today I am back down again, but it's still .5 above what I was last Tues. I am technically due for another weigh in this Tues, but what's the point?? Sorry, I realize this may sound confusing, so I am so pissed off! I can't fit hardly any food, I am doing what I am supposed to be doing - I should still be losing weight!!! It's so not worth the suffering if I am still not gonna lose weight. What is up with this????

Thanks for listening to me vent :)

You are being impatient. You have already lost 11.5 pounds in 19 days. That is very good. You ARE being successful. This is a long journey that you will be on for the rest of your life. Your body is still healing and you haven't had any fills yet.

Give your body some time to adjust. Stick to your meal plans and exercise. The weight will come off, especially after you get some restriction.

Don't weigh yourself every day. Put the scale away. Weigh yourself no more than once a week. And give yourself a break. You are doing well. Good luck.

Hey there.....I feel you. I can only tell you what I have talked with my doc and nutritionist about as well as my own experience being a behavioral science specialist.

I lost extremely fast the month before surgery and pre-op. (As I always do when I eat healthy) and the week following surgery I lost another 10+lbs. I was not able to get much of anything in.

fast forward to the present: I am eating 3 small "meals" and snack. Less than 1000 calories and cardio at least 30 minutes a day...and I have "gained 3 lbs". Im OK with that. My body has just went through a MAJOR ordeal and after 35 yrs of abusing my tummy, I have stopped! It needs to adjust. I also am addicted to the numbers on my scale and have learned that I can weigh myself every morning if I want but I don't let it dictate my day or the final outcome! Please remember this mind game we have played with our weight and body has gone on for a long time and after 2 or 3 weeks it is not fair if we judge what our possibilities are in that short time frame. I hope you get this....and keep on keepin on!

Marnina If you are pissed about your weight lose, I can't image how I am suppose to feel. I was banded on 11/09 and I have only lost around 5lbs since surgery. I actually lost a few more than that, but I have gained a few back. However, I know that I am eating what I should and that I am being active. I am just gonna have to give this tool some time. I was unable to loose weight without the band and I did HONESTLY follow the diets and I exercise 6 days a week (Personal Trainer 2 and walk 1hr for 4 days).

So, my advise to you is to be proud of yourself for what you have already accomplished. Some of us, like me, would love to see the weight loss you have. Hang in there and anytime you think your not doing good send me a message and I will be there to encourage you from one struggler to another. Keep Smilin'

your giving up after two weeks? come on... take a deep breath. go back to the pre-op lessons you got from your surgeon.

i had my surgery 11/9 and i am right there with you. i believe what we are going through is what they call bandster hell.

there are two things going on in my body (and probably yours)... 1. i was on a liquid diet beginning Nov 2nd and ending Nov 17. I lost 14 pounds during those 15 days. yay me. some days if i got in 500 calories that was a lot. since then i have started "mushies" -- so i am getting in whole foods and things like dairy and mayo which i didn't get before. so of course my body is adjusting to these things. i have jumped on the wii fit scale a couple times and i am going up about a pound or two here and there. and #2. now that i am more healed and the swelling since the surgery has gone down -- i have NO restriction. that alone is what makes the band "work". without restriction it would be very hard for me to get mad about my prediciment. i am trying to do the best i can with the little will-power i have. but i am also not beating myself up or going off the deepend at the pizza buffet.

i read somewhere on here last week the following--- and i am keeping this thought with me: roughly paraphrased-- the two pound gain i am seeing right now is not going to affect the long term results and will not matter in a year when i have lost 100 pounds.

one last thing. i threw out my scale. i am officially weighing myself and tracking my weight through my doctor's office. i will occasionally, as i mentioned, jump on the wii fit at my parents house if i am there for a progress check but i refuse to live and die by the scale ever again. weight watchers f-ed me up for years with the scale games and i can't do it anymore.

hang in there. it will be ok.

What suffering?

This surgery is supposed to be life changing. It can be if you change your life. You also have to change your thinking. Head hunger, scale watching, thinking about food all the time, focusing on the negative... These all have to become past behaviors. You are feeling sorry for yourself. Do you have kids? What do you tell them when they feel sorry for themselves.

You made a courageous decision. One that cannot be made lightly or impulsively because it takes too long, costs too much, and makes you think all the way up to surgery day. AND YOU MADE THE RIGHT DECISION. You are going to LIVE. Not just exist on a couch.

It is ok to feel this frustration. Understand where it comes from. It comes from you, your past life, your ability to see change through, and ability to find a way through it.

You need strength. You needs support. You need encouragement.

You probably have all three or you would not have gotten this far.

Don't throw in the towel. You are losing weight, making progress and changing your life. Just like alcoholics go thru DT's, you may be having head issues. food is all around us and has been a safety blanket for most of us here.

YOU CAN DO THIS. Find help today to talk to and see you through these tough days. It will get better!!!!

You were wonderful to get this far... Keep going!!!!

TJ

Ditto. My surgery was 11/3 and I've only lost 4 pounds to date. My sagging skin and clothes say differently so I'm ignoring the scale.

Sweetie, if you are frustrated now it is only gonna get much worse before it gets better. Once you transition to solid food, before you get enough fills, you are not going to be loosing hardly at all.

I have read where people say not to step on the scale every day, but I do. Each morning the first thing I do is weigh myself. I also have a cheap set of ring sizers and I size my fingers when I am bloating (so I can tell how much Water I am really carrying). The daily weighing helps me to keep on track. If I see the scale go up, I know to reevaluate my daily meal plans.

And, if i didnt fully understand what they were telling me when they said this is simply A TOOL, I do now. All it does is help me eat less and be more mindful of what I put in my mouth. But the daily decisions of what I put in my mouth are still all mine. This isnt a gastric bypass. It is different.

I understand where you're coming from, but I agree with the advice others have given. You're just at the beginning of the rest of your life with the band. Don't give up!

I thought I was being very realistic about the band: that it's just a tool and that I had to make a lot of changes. But even though in my rational mind I knew all that, I still had a part of me that wanted the band to be magical. OK, I've gone through this surgery and now the weight will all just magically come off. So if you're doing this magical kind of thinking, it's time for you to let your rational mind take over.

You're doing great, and you're just healing. Pretty soon this will be behind you and you'll be happy that you're losing. Hang in there!

Get a grip! You're already saying you're giving up and it hasn't been a month yet. Do you give up on other things this easily? Come on now, you are just beginning this journey. It's a life time journey and you're going to hit bumps, curves, and big holes sometimes just like on a bad roadway, but you can overcome all these trials & errors if you plan ahead.

You have lost what....11 pounds? You are suppose to lose 1-2 pounds a week not a day. You are ahead of this journey already. Didn't your doctor or nutritionist tell you that this was a tool and it was going to be slow going. It's not gastric bypass...it's the band.

So buck up, be patient, throw out the scale, plan your day, and things will get better. Right now, you aren't going to lose a lot every week until you start getting fills & restrictions. Even then, it's not going to be fast, fast.

You can do this if you really want it. Maybe you need to evaluate everything and rethink the whole situation. Maybe deep down, you don't want it enough to work hard for it. Nothing in life is free except salvation and everything requires hardwork in one way or another.

I know intellectually we all understand the band is a tool but i cant believe how quickly people give up on it and how they expect fast steady loss every single week.

Your body is not going to behave so predictably. You've changed your food intake all around, going from virtually nothing during your liquid phase to re-introducing food. You lose a stack of Water when you're virtually fasting and you tend to rehydrate when you start eating again, yet people think their bodies wont show that on the scales?

A big attitude adjustement and setting into this for the LONG HAUL would be beneficial to a lot of people. They can save themselves a lot of heartache that way and their bodies will do what they will do regardless. Same with plateaus. They happen. Your body breaks them eventually.

See where you are in a year the THEN decide the band's useless.

Truly, calm down. You're worrying about absolutely nothing and if you cant take the fluctuations you're better off not getting on the scale. There will also be many times when you need to go by how you feel rather than what the scales say.

I was feeling down and came here to find support. Thank you all. I was having some of the same feelings as the 1st poster. I am 25 lbs lost since starting my 2 weeks medifast before surg (Oct 30). I have only lost 5lbs since seeing my Dr Nov 5th. I am set for my band to be tightened tomorrow. Thank goodness. I am hungry all the time. It's sheer will power that is getting me through each day this last week. I can eat and have ate big portions. I am trying to stay lower carb when I eat. Diabetic too and my blood sugars are much lower if I do. I woke up this morning starving. I had a thin hamburger patty, bacon slice, Tomato slice, dill picke slice and mayo. I was in heaven. I love food. I am a foodaholic. My will power does not last long so I am hoping that having the band inflated and having restriction will help me on my way to conquering my addictions.

This is my first post.

when I get discouraged, I try to remember that the weight didn't come on over night and it's not gonna leave over night. I also try to remember that losing 1 - 2 lbs a week is a whole lot better than gaining 1 - 2 lbs per week. Losing weight is such a head game. We have to get between our ears right and not let negative self talk pull us down or keep us away from our goal.

Hang in there, be patient and stay true to the course. You will be so much thinner and so much healthier than you would be without the woderful tool that being banded provides you.

I look at these people that were banded in November saying they ONLY lost 11 or so lbs. Well, I am here to tell you, I was banded Aug. 7, it's been almost 4 weeks and I have lost 19lbs. I don't say ONLY because it's not just ONLY, it's weight loss instead of gained. If I would have kept going down the path I was on I might have gained 19lbs in 4 months. Believe me, I know what it's like to get discouraged, but when you do, you need to just give yourself a reality check. The band is designed for you to lose 1-2lbs a week.. it's not extreme lose just at one time like that gastric bypass. Please keep your head up and make this life long change.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
