First Fill not in port

Recommended Posts

I was banded Sept. 17 and went in for the first fill end of October. Nurse did the injection but I did not feel any restriction when drinking a little Water. So she put 2 more CC's up to 6. I still didn't feel any restriction, but I really didn't know what to feel.

I went back 1 month Nov. 25 and gained 4 lbs. I told the Dr. I was always hungry and had no restriction, so he chewed me out for cheating and then put 1.5 cc'.s more in. He noticed that there was nothing in the band as he started. He found out that none ever got into the band, therefore I had no real restriction. He went back in and put 6 cc's in and I tried to sip so water. I could not keep it down. So he took out 1.5 cc's . I was able to get the water down.

It has been 3 days and boy do I have restriction. I have been on liquids for the past couple of days and tried solids for the first time (cottage cheese). I am full after just a few bites. So this is how restriction is supposed to feel.

Just beware that you physician or nurse can miss the port and you should question them each time. I know I will. I also know that now I will be getting the results from the band I expected. Although I did loose 21 lbs. from day of surgery to the 6th week mark.

WOW! Thats crazy! When I go in for a fill, my Dr removes all of the lquid in my band - to make sure I have the same amount in there that i'm supposed to have, and that I'm not losing any to a slow leak or anything - and then puts in the Fill amount... And I don't know of any Dr that would put 6 cc's in at one time! Unless its just me, but that seems like an awful lot at one time to me ...

I'm glad they were able to figure it out for you ! :-)

Best of luck !!!!

Wow! Thanks for the warning. So far, my doctor has put in 4ccs on the first fill which is the most he will do at one time. The other fills have brought me up to 6.75ccs and I think my next fill will bring me up to my sweet spot as I feel very close now.

Hello,

Same thing happened to me. On my first fill, the doctor put 1 cc in 4 cc band. He was honest about it and told me he didn't think he found the port.

I went through alot of stress trying to decide if I should go elsewhere. My fiance talked to the PA and she was confident she could find it.

She did and confirmed the 1st fill wasn't in there. She has filled twice now(2cc in 4cc band) and boy do I have restriction:thumbup:. I'm 2 months post-op and learning how to live food restricted.

I am confident that I will lose all my excess weight and never have to lose it again:tt1:

Good Journey,

MaggieGT

Well, that's just grossly incompetent. To not only miss the port - twice - but to put so much in without stopping to wonder why you werent feeling it.

A fill is not a complex procedure and there's no reason why nurses shouldnt and couldnt do them, but that one needs a bit of a refresher course!

My boss has had the same surgery. She is torn between giving up and returning to a doctor that has missed her port several times now. I feel sorry for her and have encouraged her to visit the other doctor in the practice (my doctor) but haven't had any luck as of yet. She has several medical problems and I know she'd feel better if she just got the weight off. Maybe she is just waiting to see what type of luck I have with them. My surgery date is 1/13. I don't say TOO much to her since I haven't been in her shoes.. hopefully I won't be at all.

ROFLMAO...you're always hungry and he accuses you of cheating?? Please tell me he apologized when he realized that it was *their* error you had no restriction.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
