Unbanded............... To many problems

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I just returned back to work after being off for a week. I wanted to let everyone know my experience with the band. I got banded on 4-28-05. I had probably 10 fills and unfills since then. I lost 23 pounds total up and down in that time frame. Not impressive by any means, other than the fact was I hadn't lost any weight before due to yoyo dieting. It seems like I was either to tight or not enough restriction. Some of my fills were quite painful. But to make a long story short, on Sept 8th I ate a roll for Breakfast. About 1/2 hour later I felt like I had to vomit, like something was stuck. I ended up vomiting through the day as well as through the night. There was lots of dry heaves since my stomach was empty. I hadn't eaten anything since the roll. By Sunday the 9th, I was in SO much pain I called by doctor. He had me meet him at the ER and did a scope, the roll plus one of my diabetes pills was stuck. But due to the profuse vomiting my stomach had prolapsed into my band. That was what all the pain was about. He asked me if I wanted him to remove the band since I wasn't following the rules anyway, (so he says), anyway at that point I was in so much pain I said yes. I was in the hospital for 4 1/2 days, even though it was done laprascopically. Yesterday I went for a follow up and the spot where my port was, is quite hard and has a knot on it. The doctor says its scar tissue, seems funny it would of all ready built up.

Has anyone else had this problem? Had their band removed?

I thought that everyone should be aware of this being one of the risks involved. I am now going to try to keep the 25 pounds off that I did lose and continue on my weight loss journey.

Debbie

Deb, keep coming back and fighting the battle. I'm sorry you lost your band. Why were you in the hospital so long? I wish you all the luck in the world.

DeLarla,

I was in one day for the scope procedure and then the other days just related to my band removal. I also had a problem with low oxygen. Thank you and the others for your supportive comments. I appreciate and need them.

soooo sorry for you and all the pain and trouble you have had. I wish you success with losing on your own - possibly try the bandsters rules without the band -

Eat slowly

Eat small bites

exercise....

I hope that your body heals and that all is well with you. Take care.

Sorry to hear about your troubles Deb. I'm a Turtle, and haven't been able to convince my clinic that I'm following all the rules. Some of us are just slow losers I guess.

Odd about your former port site, but I would think there would be lots of swelling too. I had a problem with scar tissue, not band related. Some of us just had a problem with scar tissue forming.

Seems like someone else had problems with their band and they found out that they had pills (a ball of pills) stuck in the upper stomach. I'm going to watch out for that!

If I have to take capsules I am going to empty the contents into some pudding and then take it!

How awful for you. I am so sorry you had this experience. Have you thought about conversion to another surgery or are you going to try and do it yourself now? Good luck to you either way!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
