i guess i should have given some more info, i'm 8 days post op and doing great. i knew not to chew that gum, i new it. if y'all would have seen me trying to hack it up before it got all the way down you would have peed your pants. please tell me i'm going to live and that its not going to stay in my stomach for 7 years like my 8 year old just told me.

I would think if you're able to drink liquids okay, the gum passed. If you feel discomfort, call your doctor. Wouldn't you know you'd swallow gum now of all times. I'm sure you've chewed gum a hundred times without it happening.

I have no clue about the gum b/c I am not banded yet, BUT this was hilarious to me! Sorry for laughing...

Believe me, this is so me. if its going to happen to someone it will happen to me. i've been doing so good, too. i even saw my surgeon today for my first post op. praises all over the place. then i get home and see the Big Red Gum. Bad Idea.

ROFL...you should be fine. Doctors rarely give a fill when they put the band in so, while you may have some swelling from the surgery, you still don't have true restriction with a minimal opening.

I have to say I had the same thing happen to me yesterday (3 weeks postop) and I had this vision of the gum being stuck in the opening stretching like a bubble into the rest of my stomach, filled with everything I ate at that point.

do you know the trick of rubbing Peanut Butter in with the gum when a child gets it stuck in their hair? It breaks up the gum and no hair cutting is needed. Have you ever eaten food with gum? It breaks up the gum.

There is no way the gum will stay in your stomach for any great length of time. Your stomach acid and food will break it down.

I have swallowed many pieces of gum with the band and it has been fine. Just a bad habit I had from before the band....

But I do chew less gum now or only a 1/2 piece because it seems to just make me hungier... All the chewing that is.

My doctor doesn't gum at all. However, since you're a newbie, you probably don't have any saline in your tubing and therefore are more open than you will be later. It could pass w/o difficulty but in the future, I would re-think chewing gum. Is it worth the possible problems it could cause you?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
