massive acid reflux with each fill, but no weight loss!

Recommended Posts

Hi, my name is Kristen, and I got the surgery on September 28th.

SInce then, all I have lost is 10 pounds- and all of that was in the first 2 weeks. I haven't lost anything since then!

Before my first fill I had to come in because I was throwing up (I'm pretty sure it was just the stomach flu) and they removed all the liquid from my band- 3.5 cc's. This was the remainder from the surgery.

I stopped losing weight after this (of course), and got my first "official" fill 2 weeks ago- I am at a total of 2 cc's. Not very much I know, but they were concerned.

I still haven't lost any more weight, and now I have permanent acid reflux! Granted it started about a week after the fill, and I'm pretty sure it was because I took some antibiotics that were rough on my stomach, but it just won't stop. I have a prescription for liquid lidocaine that I take every 4 hours with maalox to help with the pain, but I'm afraid to tell my clinic, as they may just remove all my Fluid again.

**Part of my surgery was a hiatal hernia repair. I have had GERD for over 10 years, and I have had several surgeries to remove scar tissue from my esophagus. It seemed that the reflux went away after the surgery, but returned a few weeks later. **

Has anyone gone through this NO WEIGHT LOSS phase? It's been 2 months- seriously. Is it because I don't have enough fluid in my band? I am always hungry! I only eat the prescribed 4-6 oz at a time, but in a couple hours I feel hungry again and start all over.

Please let me know if this has happened to you- I am so frustrated and scared that they will remove the band. Help!

hi

Get a script for Nexium or prilosec, a PPI.It will work.

As for the weightloss.Until you have proper restriction you will have to count calories and look at your fat and carb intake per day.It doesnt happen by itself unless you are so restricted that you cannot eat too much or cannot eat some kinds of food.

Good luck and try to be patient with this.

This is something you have to discuss with your surgeon and/or his staff. There are several possible causes, but only a doctor can sort through that. I know you're frustrated and, of course, concerned that something else will interfere with your weight loss but you cannot continue with the circumstances you're experiencing. True acid reflux can erode your esophagus and over the long term can even lead to esophageal cancer. True acid reflux should be treated with a drug that decreases acid production, such as a proton pump inhibitor like Aciphex or Nexium...but, again, only your doctor can prescribe medications.

I suggest you make an appointment ASAP and clear up your questions and concerns so that you can move forward!

Good luck and keep us posted!

I was diagnosed with Gerd over 10 years ago. I have had several surgeries to remove scar tissue from my esophagus. I am well aware of the dangers, and I appreciate your concern. Part of my banding was a hiatal hernia repair. This got rid of my reflux temporarily, but it seems to have returned. I already take Nexium, and this seems to be breakthrough acid reflux.

I am concerned because the hernia repair should have gotten rid of my GERD completely.

Kristen,

I can't speak to the acid reflux issue. This is something you need to discuss with your doctor. It appears you have some special issues due to your GERD and scar tissue.

As for not losing weight...when you say you eat a little but are still hungry and then start all over, you're most likely eating the same calories (or nearly so) as you did prior to the surgery.

Start keeping a food journal. You'll probably find this is true. Plan 6 small meals through the day, eating about every 3 hours. This helps keep the blood sugar stable resulting in hunger and cravings being kept at bay. If you get 'hungry' between these mini-meals, drink Water or even warm broth. Many times I find that warm broth soothes the tummy and lets me make it to that next meal.

These mini meals may help with y our acid reflux as well. They did with mine.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
