Are there any other banders out there with a starting BMI of 35 or less? I'm getting my band in 1 week and I would love to hear about your experence with the band and how the weightloss is going. Thanks for any response!

I believe there is a thread about low BMI'ers somewhere on this site. You may have to search for it for a while but I'm sure it is informative.

Hi there -

Congratulations on making the decision to get the band! I was banded almost three months ago with a starting BMI of around 34. I have experienced a slower-paced weight loss than many who have WLS, but I think that's to be expected when you have a lower BMI (and that's what my surgeon has said again and again). Do you have any specific questions? I'd be happy to give you my personal experience.

Probably one of the biggest things that I didn't realize was that from surgery to proper adjustment (could take several fills), I didn't feel any restriction. I thought the darn thing hadn't taken. It wasn't until my band was properly adjusted that I started seeing progress. Last month I lost 6 pounds, just as an example. I'm totally stoked with that weight loss. It may not sound like a lot to some, but it is huge to me - especially after years of trying to lose weight on my own without success.

I wouldn't trade the band for the world, and my only regret is that I didn't do it sooner.

Let me know if you have any specific questions, and congrats!! You're going to love your new life.

Thanks Surfergirl!

I'm glad you are happy with your band. I'm just having some last minute jitters and it doesnt help that the few people I have told act like I'm totally crazy and they don't think I weigh enough. I'm sure I'm doing the right thing and I appricate you insight!

The band tends to work the best, statistically, for lower BMI patients. They have more chance of getting right down to a lower BMI, they are more mobile, there's a high chance that eating is less disordered (making the band easier to work with) and the loose skin isnt as big an issue.

A very sensible choice to nip this problem in the bud now before your BMI is 45!

I've had fantastic experience with my band, my weight loss was slower than a lot of people, steady, but averaging only 1lb a week or so. But I lost a lot of weight quickly at first, 2 or 3 lb a week, so I was out of obese territory within six months.

Hi Homewith2, I was banded on Nov. 5th with a BMI of 34.5. I am extreamly happy that I was banded. I've lost around 15 pounds so far. I get my first fill on Dec. 2nd and I can't wait because I've gottten to a point where I feel like I can eat more now. I'm sure a lot of the swelling has gone down and the little weight I've lost has helped with the decreased restriction. I'm looking forward to the restriction a fill will give me. Good luck, and I think the jitters are normal. Even the first couple days after getting the band I had doubts on if I should have done it or not, but I think it was the pain and meds talking. I'm very happy now. Good Luck!!!!

Thanks to everyone who has posted so far. It's great to see I'm not the only one doing this with a BMI of 34.5. It sounds like everyone so far is happy they did it!

Hi there,

I got banded on 10/3 and have only lost 12 lbs so far. That's a great loss if you consider it's only about 2 months ago and I have not exercised yet due to my back problems. I have also not had my first fill yet as I am still having trouble getting used to not eating too quickly and frequently PB. I am still working on eating slower and chewing but all in all I am happy with the band. I am more conscious of my decisions concerning food which is good and as soon as I feel physically well I will start exercising.

It is a bit discouraging to see how much others are losing but you have to keep remembering we weren't weighing as much so our weight loss will be slower. All in all as long as I can lose weight without taking diet pills and while getting my health to improve, that's all I want! Of course I keep waiting for the day I can say I have lost 50-70 lbs but I have set that goal way out as to not get disappointed:) Good luck don't be nervous! You will be fine.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
