Day 6 of 14 of my pre-op all liquid diet!

Recommended Posts

Deltamom,

My surgery is also on Dec 14th. I am on day 2 of liquids and have somewhat of a headache. I am in school, so I am also in the midst of finals (fabulous timing on my part). I go tomorrow for my pre-opt appointment. Having some doubts and anxiety, but chugging along none-the-less. Just wanted you to know you had a partner in this

I am on my first day of the clear liquid diet and so far, I am cranky as hell! I am starving! I am drinking my SlimFast and my Clear Liquids but this is harder than I thought it was going to be. My surgery date is Dec 14 and I really hope I make it too! Any ideas from anyone?

Try a Protein that is made of whey Protein isolate instead of SlimFast. Slimfast tends to have sugar and sodium. Sugar in return is going to make you hungry instead of doing it's job. It's also empty calories. whey Protein Isolates made of Veggies or Soy will keep you satisfied longer. I use the Dymatize Elite Protein powder. There are several ones on the market. You also might not get light headed like most people do. Whey tends to run a little more expensive then SlimFast but it's better for you.

I totally feel for the people who are going to be on the liquid diet over Christmas, I'll be doing it right along with ya! My scheduled surgery is Monday, January 4th, I'm about 266 right now and need to be 259 for surgery so I need to lose 7 lbs, when should I start my liquid diet?

missKAYLA: I feel ya. I was on liquids for both Thanksgiving AND my 30th birthday. Yick, but, it was worth it. I was able to lose 18 pounds on my liquid diet. I was on all liquids, Protein Shakes, sugar free Jello and bouillon, but, since the sodium is so high in the bouillon, I only had one serving a day. I started mine 2 weeks exactly before the surgery. I would say to start yours maybe at LEAST 10 days out and make sure to keep the sugar and carb content on your shakes low. I used the Atkins Advantage shakes, they're pretty good. Good luck!

They go by the BMI at my doctors. If your BMI is 45 or over it's 2 weeks before surgery. Lower than 45 it's 1 week before surgery.

Congratulations and good luck to you.

Are you banded now? If so, how is it going. I would like to ask what type of insurance you have. I have to go through a 6 month Dr. supervised diet too and I am curious what exactly you did?

I wasn't sure if you were talking to me or someone else so I will answer anyway. I applogize if it wasn't for me. I was banded on Oct. 23, 2009. I have BC/BS as my insurance company an dI had to go through the 6 months of supervised diet. Which was really 6 nutrional visits. We weren't expected to lose weight but we weren't supposed to gain an enourmous amount of weight either or the insurance company wouldn't have approved us. I also had to go through 1 cardiologist visit, 1 upper endescopie, 1 pulmonary doctor, 1 phsyciatric, and a letter of support and dietary habits from my primary doctor.

As for how I am doing now. I have lost 29lbs since surgery and 3 clothing sizes. I had my first fill on Dec. 3. I do feel restriction. Many people don't. I'm feeling awesome. Have WAY more energy then I did before. I go to the gym at least 2-3 times a week. On the weekends I walk about 4 miles each day. I use my Wii Fit at home.

i am only on day 2 of liquid diet and i think i am going crazy!! i am trying hard but does it get easier as the days go on?

I wasn't on a total liquid diet (I was allowed one small low fat/very low carb/high Protein meal). My worse day was day two for sure. I'm sure it was my body getting used to having very few carbs. I hope you start to feel better tomorrow.

Your body is going through starvation mode right now. It does get easier as you go along. Keep up the good work. You are almost there.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
