Weight Loss Before Surgery

Recommended Posts

So, I'm 75% thru all of the pre-op phases of testing and dr. visits. No problems at all. However, before my surgeon will schedule my surgery date I have to lose 16lbs. Easier said than done. I have been dieting for 3 weeks now and lost a grand total of 2lbs. Can anyone provide any quick, yet healthy, weight loss tips? Im desperate! lol.

A lot of surgeons give a high protein/low carb liquid diet prior to surgery to shrink the liver. Do a search on pre-op diet and it should bring up some more info.

I know you can do this!

I agree with Northern Mist. Pre-op diet will do it. I have lost 5 lbs in 4 days. I am allowed to have 2 lean cuisine meals, 2 Protein Shakes, 1 cup vegs and 1/2 cup of fruit per day and lots of water....you can do it! Good luck

I agree with the pre-op diet for weight loss. My pre-op is 3 Protein shakes per day. In the first week alone, I lost 17.4 lbs. It's really, really, really hard to stick to, BUT if you want something bad enough, it's doable!

Over 17 pounds in one week is fantastic!! Good for you. How long do you have to do your pre-op diet for? I have to do mine for 2 wks. My surgery date is Dec 3rd. I am hoping to lose another 8-10 pounds by then.

Thanks! My pre-op is 2 weeks. Today is the last day of Protein shakes. Tomorrow (the day before surgery) is Clear liquids only. I'm so happy to be almost done with this part! I'll weigh myself Wed morning to see how much more I am down and to get my surgery date weight.

Thank you for the advice, I guess I will be headed out to the store tomorrow to check out the protien shakes. Any brands better/cheaper than the next?

I like the EAS chocolate shake mix at Sam's club. It's like $30 for 5 pounds compared to $60 for 3.5 pounds of Isopure powder at GNC.

It tastes better too.

Losing weight is all about diet and exercise. I see a lot of talk here about diet but absolutely nothing about exercise.

You don't have to starve yourself, just eat sensibly and go out and walk every day. It's no fun but it gets easier every day.

Actually recent studies suggest that weight loss is all about food choices and calories...not exercise. Of two study groups, those who just dieted lost more weight and kept it off longer than those who exercised and dieted. They believe this is because exercise actually makes some people hungrier.

I've never exercised with any diet plan and I still lost weight. I took 70 lbs off six years ago and have kept it off...all without exercising.

I don't plan on exercising this time either and if anyone who believes exercise is necessary wants to compare weight loss results in 2 years, I'm game.

You're on!

That study sounds like a bunch of crap.

I'll be looking for you in November of 2011.

LOL...will do. It always takes the 'diet/nutrition' industry time to catch on. One only has to look at the food pyramid that they touted for decades, only to turn it on its head in the last few years.

Personally, I think it's all a load of crap. Our bodies are unique and as such, each has its own unique set of needs, but the diet/nutrition industry wants to treat us as if we've all been punched out of a cookie cutter.

I'm sure there are some people who actually do feel better when they exercise several times a week. I've never been one of them...and yet I've always been more in shape and in better health than many people my age (at any age I was at) even if I was heavier than they were just because of my lifestyle. Still am.

See you in Nov. 2011 for a comparison.

The EAS shakes are very good. (I prefer chocolate). I also like the power better than the pre-made shakes. Buy your self a shaker and go for it! You will notice weight loss and more energy!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
