I was banded 10.28.09 Is this normal?

Recommended Posts

I was banded 10.28.09.. It was great in the beginning I could barely eat a half can of Soup. (you know the REAL serving size) of course as I healed my appetite grew. I am scheduled for my first fill 11/30/09. (the Dr wanted to wait until after Thanksgiving) I am almost 4 weeks post op, still only eating soft foods, mashed potatoes, sugar free pudding, eggs, skim milk, ground turkey. This weekend I am always starving and I hate it! I also have to urinate way more than usual. I am not drinking anymore than usual. WTH? I hope my band is ok,,,,anyone ever have this problem?

The hungry is called "Bandsters Hell". Try very hard not to give into it and eat only those portions that your doctor told you to eat. Try eating things higher in Protein and waiting longer to drink after you eat. Eat some white chicken in a can with a little olive oil mayo, Flaky fish (flounder, tuna, salmon), ricotta cheese, and All natural Peanut Butter. Those have helped me. As for the peeing, it's because when you lose weight it comes out as Water. It's nothing to be alarmed about. That's how your body flushes all of the toxins out of your body (toxins and fat). Also make sure that you ARE drinking at least 64oz of fluids a day. That includes your Protein Shakes. My nutritionist also allowed me to have 8oz of Protein shakes 3 times a day instead of the 4oz. She said that I can have the 2 shakes and if I am really hungry, that I can have the 3 shakes. Ask your doctor.

Yes!!! It's normal. Immediately after surgery you're going to have some swelling and inflammation. Once that goes away, since you have no fill in your band, you WILL get hungry. Then you start the fill process. It's all good. Just be patient.

I was banded on October 27th, and I know EXACTLY what you are going through. Within the last week, my appetite has sky rocketed! I try to eat a smaller portion than normal and added an extra meal. No matter what I eat, I find I am hungry a couple hours later. I try to drink Water instead of eating, or if I want to eat, it is something VERY small. I have actually gained some weight because I have moved on to more solid foods. Guess it is time to step up the exercise and cut back the foods. Best of luck!! Hang in there!

Remember to keep your Protein intake up. My doctor suggest that you get Protein Powder and mixed in coffee or milk. Drinking a shake will help with the food cravings.

Remember you are just starting out and the band is only a tool.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
