Surgery to First Fill Weightloss???

Recommended Posts

Hi, just back from my pre-op in Vancouver.

All went very well except my surgeon said that they don't expect patients to lose any weight in the six weeks between surgery and the first fill.

That doesn't seem to match with what I've been reading on the forum.

Please let me know what your experience has been at this particular stage of the journey.

Thanks:ohmy:

I sure wish my surgeon had told me that! I have lost 5 lbs since my surgery on 10/22 and my first fill is on 12/01. I have been feeling horrible for only having lost 5 lbs. I even started exercising and I eat around 1200 calories a day. My surgeon didn't say I wouldn't lose weight, but he also didn't say that I would. I just assumed once the band is in....

I'm 4 weeks post-op. I lost 20 pounds in the two weeks before surgery. In the first week after surgery I lost 7 pounds and another 10 in week 2-4. Total post-op so far is about 17 (technically a little less since the scale at the Dr. office adds a few more than mine at home). I thought I'd loose more in the first weeks but I'm happy I at least lost something. I'm really looking forward to my fill in two weeks!

Thanks for the encouragement!

I'm sorry you had that experience ml, I hope I don't have the same one.

It seems odd when you've had a small pouch made, even if it's not tightened.

Best wishes on future success.

I had my band put in on October 19 and since then I've lost the big doughnut. (not an actual doughnut, although I wouldn't care if I had lost an actual doughnut since I don't really care for them)

You have to bear in mind that every "Body" is different. When you had the surgery, they placed the band. The band is not filled and you should not feel any restriction, therefore your stomach is still the same size as before you had surgery. Many people who have lost weight right after surgery are showing signs of "Lifestyle" change, thus changing their diet, their eating habits, portion size, etc. It could be any combination of things that changed your life since your surgery.

Don't worry because you have not lost a lot of weight, I myself was very disappointed with myself because I thought that the weight would just start shedding off. However when I went for my first fill yesterday (Banded 10/28/09) I had lost 20 pounds and I had lost inches all over. I can now wear my old engagement ring, because my hands are slimming down.

There will just be slight changes, don't expect to move mountains in the beginning. Just concentrate on the ant hills and you will be on top of the mountain before you know it.... Good Luck, and don't give up !!!!

I was told the same thing. I think they tell you that because the band isn't helping you fully until you get the right restriction and they don't want you to get discouraged if you gain or don't lose much before then. You do need a healing time. For myself, I did lose weight and they again said that was unusual. But I did feel some restriction, and it only took 2 fills for me to get to too tight. So it varies by different factors, like just how tight your band is from the beginning, and I see a lot of people on here that are doing it through willpower and sticking to the recommended food portions even if they could eat more, and maybe they are also changing to healthier foods too.

Good luck with your weight loss, maybe you'll be a lucky one.

Really that is amazing why so long? Did you not feel hungry? I would think even though you don't have the band real tight if you eat food that stays in the top portion of the band it should make you feel feel longer and you still lose weight but i am hearing no it does not work like that.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
