Tomorrow is my first Lap band consult appt

Recommended Posts

Well guys, I found out 11/01/09 that my insurance will be changing 1/1/10 to a policy that will cover the lap band. I went to my first seminar on 11/05/09 and my second one on 11/10/09. My consultation is scheduled for tomorrow just to start the ball rolling.

I know that my new insurance plan will require a 6 month physican supervised diet. Anyone have any suggestions? I have thought of going to my PCP now and just self paying for the visit just to get things started. What do you guys think? Anyone have the same experiences?

Wonderful news about improved insurance coverage! As for the 6-month diet, I just did Weight Watchers, and started well before I even had a consult. Probably because I thought I had to have it behind me before I could take the consult step. My PCP told me that WW would work fine, at least with my insurance, and it was productive. I lost 48 lbs before I was banded and it made a huge difference.

Thanks Alto, My insurance from what I hear want it to be very documented and under a physican monthly evaluation. I can't complain because I have been praying for my insurance to change and cover the procedure for almost 3 years now but dang.... I was hoping to have it sooner.

Check out the Bodybugg. It is working wonders for me. I've dropped 37 pounds in 2 months just making sure I burn 1500 more calories than I consume.

The Bodybugg tells you what you are burning and you enter what you are eating on their site to calculate how you consume.

I honestly have not been hungry. I basically am eating all of the same stuff but have cut portions by about 25% and am walking for about an hour a day at a comfortable pace.

Also, the doctor will want you to document how many calories you are eating every day and that is easy if you are already entering them for the Bodybugg.

I had to do the six month Dr. supervised diet.On my first visit I asked what kind of diet I would be on and the Dr. said,"Diet? there aint no diet.If you lose weight on the diet they may not approve you.Just let me do the documentation and you will be approved,Ive done this many times in the past."He was right.I finished the six months in Sept.2007 and was approved in Nov. and had my band on Jan.21 2008.

If the doctor is not honest with the insurance company, what makes you think he will be any more honest with you.

Good luck!

The consult went well and I am super excited. I had my first month appointment today and the doctor just said to exercise and cut portions and calaries and he will document as needed.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
