(Stupid Q:) Weight Loss PER week or month...

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I am getting banded on December 7th, and I am just curious to see how much you guys have lost per month or week. I am pretty sure it's impossible to lose 20lbs a month, right? That would be about 5lbs a week and that's probably too much? Not sure where I'm going with these questions...and I know everyone is different. Just trying to get a real feel on how everyone did after their surgery.

Thanks!

Yes, everyone is different but in the beginning I was losing very rapidly. It's slowed down to about 1-2 pounds per week if I'm lucky.

Hi Radio, no that is not a stupid question at all! It’s very commonly asked and a really good one.

I lost 60 Lbs in the first few months, about 3 and a half really. That’s pretty fast. I’ve stalled for awhile but I’m so glad I have my band!! It’s working again now that I’m working IT… ;-)

I know everyone loses weight differently. However, I think 1 or two pounds a week is more like it.

I found that I have averaged 10 pounds a month since my surgery. I just went for a fill yesterday and I had lost 12 pounds in 6 weeks. The nurse was really complimentary and saying "wow, that is great". I said that it was only 2 pounds a week and I thought that was right? She said that by this time people are usually losing 1 pound a week, even with exercise. I guess I'm lucky for the moment, but the day will come when I'm not losing so fast--I'm not looking forward to it!

It's theoretically possible to lose that much in a month but it's not the best idea. I lost 30lbs in 30 days doing the pre-op diet, but I was also losing hair in handfuls, lethargic, and sending my hormones on a roller coaster ride. It was not fun. You'll also send your body into starvation mode and it will hold on to every calorie you eat for dear life and slow your whole metabolism down, which is definitely not what you want. Since I've come off pure liquids I haven't lost an ounce in a month. I'm sure I'll start losing again once I get a fill and my body gets the idea the starvation is over.

I've lost 37 pounds in the last 2 months and have not been banded yet or gone crazy with diet and exercise.

I started at 365 and could probably have dropped close to 100 by now if I worked my butt off and dieted.

It all depends on how much you weigh, what gender you are, what type of food you eat and a few other variables.

The heaviest people on "The Biggest Loser" drop 60+ pounds in a month and it doesn't seem to be hurting them.

In perusing these boards for a couple of months I've calculated the average loss here is 2 lbs a week. That is also what my surgeon said the average was. So, I am guessing the 2 lbs thing is probably for real.

Hi Radio Girl,

I don't think I have heard one constant thing for everyone yet, that has had the surgery!! I was banded on September 21. I want to lose about a 110 pounds. I lost 16 pounds in the 2 1/2 months prior to surgery and have lost another 36 pounds since surgery. I am VERY happy with the results and fortunately I have had a great experience so far. I still have that mental hunger. I think if I stopped eathing and thought about whether I was hungry or not I would stop eating sooner! I had my first fill on Nov 3 and feel a little restriction but I am still losing weight so I might skip my next scheduled fill which is right before Christmas. I haven't experienced any "getting stuck" or getting sick issues yet and figure if I am still losing why mess with the amount of fill. There are some foods I haven't tried (like bread) but I might just stay clear of that forever. I have not gone back to eating sweets yet, either. I think I have tried to change my feelings about food. I am trying to eat to live rather than live to eat (which was my attitude before surgery). So many social functions revolve around food and I have been able to still participate so I am overall happy with my decision to have surgery.

I've lost 5 pounds a week before. Its not consistent, it never is. But right after surgery, I lost at least 3 pounds a week. Its been 1.5 years since my surgery and I am still losing around a pound a week. It does slow down the closer you get to your goal/ideal body weight.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
