so... i dont want to wait a year now

Recommended Posts

Ok.. if you wanna tell me "your supposed to wait a year" i dont want to hear it... I get that surgeons want you to wait a year. =)

I want to get pregnant now. Its 6 months after surgery I'm down like 80 lbs and I don't want to wait another 6 months to start trying.

My husband and I have been married for 4 years, together for 5. For the first time in our relationship he has started to talk about really wanting to get pregnant and starting our family. We tried for all of those years btw.. including a few months on clomid.

So hear I am thinking.. do I ask my surgeon? Cuz if he says to wait.. well what happens if I dont wait? is he going to be upset at me?

I have lost more weight in 6 months than most are able to loose in a year, and much more than my own surgeon expected of me.

I've heard so many ppl who did "oops" get pregnant.. and they did fine and things were great.

So whats 6 months u ask? well.. considering I still am not ovulating and I've been through the process before.. it takes at lesat a couple months even to get going with a good fertility doctor and on meds for it.... plus this being the 2nd round.. im sure they will want to test other things instead of assuming its because of PCOS.

My brother is now expecting #2.. my best friend is trying to get prego for #2.. everyone we know has small children. We are like the childless couple in our little ring of friends.. and anyone who has been in my shoes knows how bad that is. Not to mention both of our parents are getting very old.. and both of us want our children to at least remember their grandparents.

I am ready now.. I want this now. 80 lbs is a huge accomplishment.. yes i know i could loose more if i wait.. but honestly that isnt what I want right now yes thats crazy.. but right now I want to start a family.

Anyways.. had to get it off my chest. thanks for listening to my rambles

I say go for it..my band buddy who was banded with me got pregnant 4 months post op and had a beautiful healthy baby boy and still had her 1.1cc fill the entire time during pregnancy. No problems or complications what so ever..

I think you should go ahead and talk to your surgeon now. Especially in light of how long it may take and how much medical intervention may be required, it may indeed be months before you conceive. There's no medical reason to avoid getting pregnant shortly after being banded, so I can't see him objecting on any real grounds. The only thing is that it may compromise your weight loss (duh!) but of course that's your decision to make.

Even if he does recommend waiting a little while longer before starting in with fertility interventions, maybe nature will surprise you in the meantime! Hey, with weight loss often comes increased fertility. All our fingers and toes are crossed for you! :)

What Alexandra said is true...we tried for 8 years to concieve through artificial measures. Finally a super fertitlity dr told if I would just lose 50 pounds that might make all the difference. I did and before I knew it I was pregnant. So it might not be that hard. I wish you all the best in this, because believe me when I say...i know what you are going through and feeling.

Katie.....I'd talk to my surgeon but I think I'd also go ahead but at least I would have told my doctor and feel better. The last time I went to see my surgeon there were two ladies in the waiting room with me and one was pregnant now after trying for 6 years. She said she'd read somewhere that some people called this the miracle band for two reasons....they were able to lose weight and got pregnant after getting the band whereas before they'd had trouble. Hopefully this will be the case for you!

I agree with the others- but you may find that you still have trouble concieving and need to lose a little more weight to make it easier. You still are significantly overweight (so am I!) even after your loss...and we all know that-statistically anyway-overweight women have underweight babies (how in the heck can that be?). If I were you, I'd go off of all birth control and see what happens. If after the next 6 months you still haven't conceived, then go to a specialist. Roll the dice and see what fate has in store!

In addition to asking your surgeon, I'd ask the fertility doc as well. It would be best to get both of their opinions, that way you will have all bases covered.

I know how you feel, been there when I was younger, much younger. Having a baby is very important and you want to make sure you do absolutely everything just right for your sake and the babies sake. I wish you the very best of luck and will keep you in my prayers that the docs give the go ahead and that you get pregnant on your first try:-]

when the time is right you will get prego. With the more weight loss, the better chemical chance of getting prego will be. I know you want to do it now, but you had major surgery and your doctor wants to make sure your body is ready and able to carry a baby to term.

Good luck!!!!

I'd start the process now but be realistic about setting your weight loss goals aside.

however with discipline and attention to detail it IS possible to get through a pregnancy without gaining significant weight. I've done it and my baby was a beautiful bouncing 3.7kg, which is around 8lb. I didnt waste a calorie, no rubbish passed my lips, I ate good, healthy, low fat food from all food groups, exercised throughout the pregnancy and just kept to 25 weight watchers points a day. I came out of hospital 10kg lighter than when I'd conceived.

I would definetly consult the dr's first. The problem is that you still have quite a bit of weight to lose and there is still high risks with pregnancy and overweight......eg.bloodpressure problems....ect......

Just make sure that everything is well controlled.......

When I went in the day before my surgery, my surgeon said to me "The great thing about the band is that if you got pregnant tomorrow, you'd be fine."

I think the stigma of waiting a year or two is there because that's what they tell bypass patients to do, and they don't 'know' any different for the band. If you get an unfill you can have a completely normal pregnancy since you don't have malabsorbtion issues, and some people don't even need to be unfilled all the way, or at all and they do fine as well.

Good luck!

I say go for it. Given your history it is likely that it will take a few months to get preggers anyways. Start your folic acid supplements and get busy! :(

Nice job on the 80 lb weight loss by the way. :)

I hope you don't find this offensive as we are all over weight and I specifically got the band to lose enough weight to have children. If you read up (even online or in nutrition books) on obesity and pregnancy you will see the dangers there can be for the child and you. Even being just 30 pounds overweight is dangerous and causes all sorts of other problems. I also have PCOS and have noticed that the more weight I lose, the more regular I become and the better opportunity to become pregnant on my own. My OBGYN has also said these things to me. You have got to know that as you become pregnant you will more than likely gain more weight, so I say the more weight you lose the better before getting pregnant. You are still very young and have plenty of time to start a family. The docs tell us to wait a year so that our weight can level off and we can be down to a healthier weight to carry a baby. Please read up on this before you make your decision to start now. Please do your own research to understand the difficulties of having a baby while being obese. I have wanted children for 3 years now and keep holding off knowing the less I weigh the more healthy my baby and pregnancy will be in the long run. It shows you only to be 23 and you have a lifetime ahead of you to be the ones with the kiddos running around. You can take this with a grain of salt or however you want because I am not a doctor, I just hope you take all of that into consideration before you rush into getting pregnant. I wish you the best of luck in whatever you decide and hope you didn't take this e-mail as badgering or being bitchy! :()

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
