Stretching or Just Chicken Unfriendly?

Recommended Posts

Got banded 10/16 and by the third week I was so sick of not “chewing” that I started to eat chicken and pulverize it in my mouth- It seemed fine then- About 2 weeks ago I must have forgotten that I had the band because I was so hungry that I had some chicken and I felt this incredible pain and for a while there it seemed like anything I ate I felt. Almost like you feel something going down your throat only this time it was my stomach- arrggg no pain just weird feeling. Yesterday I had some chicken again didn’t eat it too fast but incredible pain again! I tried some Water to push it down but big mistake. I had to go through the pain till everything settled down. So, is it stuck has it slipped, or chicken is just not my band’s friend? Also I am curious how many people eat the measurement of food as directed? It’s just impractical sometimes- and I sure hope my eyeballs are accurate enough.

Bernard ( that's my band's name) does not like chicken, at all! He will rebel whenever I try to eat some. So, I have stopped eating it for awhile. I think it is because it can be dry and that irritates him for some reason. I have heard that if you cook the chicken in gravy or sauce of some kind, it helps. I am just too chicken (oops, sorry, couldn't resist) to try it for now.

I don't think you have hurt your band but if it continues to bother you, contact your doctor.

Don't give up on chicken - I can eat it most of the time.

It needs to be moist, leg meat is better than breast and preferably in sauce of some kind. Eat really small bits and chew well before you swallow. If you do this you will probably find it is fine.

Also what food works one day often won't the next as the band can be fickle! So don't give up on foods just try them again later.

I eat chicken most of the time, but my daughter who was banded 2 years ago, cannot eat it. I like it but like the previous poster, I need to make sure it is moist. I put it in the crock pot with a can of some kind of creamy Soup and it usually works. I do have to eat it slow and in very small bites. I suggest you back off for a few days and maybe even go back to mushys for a day to see if you just need a rest. Hope this helps....

Hi, Well chicken for me sometimes ok others not. Yes the dark meat is much better going down if it is too dry forget it. Lately I make alot of toasted Sandwiches. Seems that chicken or what ever made in a sandwich goes down better. I think one that I have better control of taking smaller bites.

Getting to the point where you are really hungry before eating can be dangerous, as you have found out, because you can forget to chew well. That's probably why the chicken got stuck. You were eating it before, so I don't think it is just that it is chicken. You may be a little swollen yet, or well restricted too.

I had chicken for lunch today, it was cold but moist, I was a little hungry too when I started, had a few bites, it got uncomfortable, ending up bringing it back up. Then I ate about another 3 ozs just fine - by concentrating on chewing it well.

As far as amount goes, I just weigh/measure when I can and then you start to eyeball the amounts. I don't think you need to worry about eating exactly the amount suggested - you want to eat enough to fill you up and not be hungry. If it's more than you should have, you might not lose weight as fast, but it's a sign that you may need a fill. Good Luck. This is a learning process.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
