So I got banded on the 13th. I am just ending the 4th day of the clear liquid diet. All I can say is that I am so hungry! Is this normal? I figured it would be since I don't get a fill for a few more weeks. Any suggestions on how you get this hunger to go away? lol

Congratulations!

You're going to be starving until you get more Protein in. And you'll be hungry even after you get a fill (This surprised me too:eek:) but it's all about learning to listen to the band and your body right? That's what I'm working on.

Talk to your doctor and see if you can start the non-clear liquids- a Protein shake would probably help you out a lot.

I have not been banded yet, 12/9/09. But I already have my post-op instructions. Two days of Clear Liquids, then 12-14 days of Protein Shakes. Opti-fast or Slim fast, low carb Meal Replacement. Maybe you can call the dr.'s office and see if it's ok to start on the Protein Drinks? Good luck.

If you are on true clear liquids (not Protein shakes) then I would call the Dr's office and let them know you are hungry and see if you can start shakes. I'm not a huge shake fan but they do really help with the hunger.

I was starving too after surgery. I mean, I had fasted (clear, no-cal liquids) for a week prior. My body was just screaming for something to eat.

I called my surgeons office and they OK'd me to do oyster crackers. I was instructed to basically let them dissolve before swallowing. I was so thankful to have that permission.

I'd call and ask if I were you - can't hurt, right?

Good luck!

I am also a newbie just banded on 11/12- as I read posts I see our post op instructions are as different as we are:laugh: Like an earlier post, my post op diet only stated 2 days clear liquid. Then 14 days of thick liquid (basically anything that will go in a straw-without using a straw) I've gotten a few hunger pains and the most satisfaction I've gotten is drinking Muscle Milk Light. It has 100 calories with > 3g of fat or sugar.

Best of Luck!!!!

I also was banded on 11/12 and should have been on clear liquids for a week. Well, I can't even get a Protein Drink made with Water down!!! WTH! Called doc today and he said it is swelling.......this is not fun:thumbdown:

Hunger is very normal at the stage you are at. Not much you can do on clear liquids to keep hunger at bay unless you just keep drinking Water. The s/f Jello and s/f popcicles help some. Are you able to have clear Protein yet?

Swelling is not fun! You are getting a glimpse of what restriction feels like with the swelling. After my last fill I was too tight for nearly 2 weeks before going back for an unfill. It totally sucks to be so swollen you can't eat or drink. Taking my pills was such an ordeal I would rather not remember.

Did your doctor tell you to return to clear liquids until the swelling goes down? This is what you should have been told.

Check with your surgeon on this, but I'm willing to bet he gave you a fill during surgery and this is why you are so swollen. Many surgeons do fill at the time they install the band. You may need a slight unfill. Check your surgical report and see if it says anything about it.

They stated that it wasn't filled but when he flushes the band, there may be some Fluid that is leftover in the band. If my "problem" persists to call tomorrow and he would see me. Thanks!

Hey -- I to, got banded November 13th!! I'm drinking all clear fluids with the exception of Protein shakes. I was starving and I had no energy so I go the go ahead to do the shakes. My doctor told me to have 2oz of the shake every hour. That's a lot of drinking! I'm sure once you start that you'll feel better. I can't wait to progress to full liquids, I'm gonna call and see if theres any way to eat full liquids sooner.

I'm gonna add you as a friend as you had the surgery the same day as me and I like having friends to go through the same stages together. Keep us posted.

Hi Jessica-

Im glad your doing so well. That would be great if we could be friends. It is better talking with people going through the same stages. I.. of course love that others have gone before me as well! LOL

Today has been soooo much better for me. I am at work and am sipping a Protein Drink slowly. I started at about 745am and Im down about 12 ounces. No pain, yet. I am really hungry today though. My tummy is really roaring!

Hi everyone. i've been having the same problem. I was banded on the 12th, and I am starving. i just figured it was because i'm on liquids, and not regular food. i'm glad ro know i'm not the only one going through it and it's normal. my only difference though, is that my post-op instructions don't have me on liquids for 2 weeks. my instructions have starting on soft foods at week 2. i was exctied when i saw that, but i may rethink that after reading what everyone else said.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
