Curlycat3 0 Posted November 14, 2009 This is a bit of an odd question but I'm wondering if anyone can help me out with a solution. I usually drink my Water from a 1 litre bottle that has a straw attached. I understand that straws are not good after surgery so I need to find another type of water bottle.< /p> A non-spill bottle because our cats make a sport out of knocking over our drinking glasses! So I'm wondering if the sippy cup style of container is any good, or is it still too straw-like? I'm not around little kids so I'm out of my league here. Any suggestions? Many thanks!
illuminationlady 7 Posted November 14, 2009 I bought four sippy cups from Target for after my surgery on the recommendation of many others on this site. The word is, after surgery, "walk, walk, walk....sip, sip, sip...walk, walk, walk...sip, sip, sip" The walking is for the gas pains and the sipping is for dehydration. I also purchased children's plates, utencils and Gas X strips. Take the Gas X strips to the hosptial with you!
NewKate 1 Posted November 14, 2009 why can't you use straws? What happens?
glittergirl 0 Posted November 14, 2009 i was wondering the same thing, i like straws:confused:
Curlycat3 0 Posted November 14, 2009 Everything I've been told or read so far says that straws are a "no-no" because people tend to drink so much more and more quickly when you use them. I like them too for that very reason but the message seems to be slow and gentle, even with Water. I know I'd forget and suck down close to a litre before I knew it. I went today and got two sippy cups and some baby spoons in the baby section of ToysRUS. I'll give those a go for now. Thanks for the feedback. If you can sip from a straw slowly, or your doctor doesn't stipulate this, I say keep-on-sippin!
glittergirl 0 Posted November 14, 2009 oh that makes sense...thanks!
singand_dance 8 Posted November 16, 2009 You also tend to swallow air with a straw.
SassyB 0 Posted November 16, 2009 I was told that the straw would causes me to get gas. I haven't used one since being on the pre-op diet. After surgery I get gas no matter what I have, so knowing that the straw will add gas I stay away from it. I have started using Water bottles with the sport top. KarynA 0 Posted November 16, 2009 So... I've decided to keep the fact that I'm having LB surgery to myself - for the most part anyway. Knowing that I'll need to consume at least 64 ozs of liquid a day (post op), and knowing that sippy cups are great because with straws you tend to drink too fast and/or swallow air, which causes gas (see? I read!, how do I not call attention to mysellf as I work in my office... drinking out of a toddler's cup? Maybe I'll keep a 'mock grown-up cup' out on my desk and keep the sippy cup concealed.
Melinco 1 Posted November 17, 2009 For me, I drink out of a 16.9 oz Water bottle all day, however, I tend to guzzle my water. I think I will have to change up to drinking out of a glass with ice in it. It seems like I sip more using that. Of course, if it didn't have ice it in, I'd probably guzzle, but it's hard to guzzle when you have ice hitting your lips and getting in the way.
BigMomma 0 Posted November 18, 2009 I read somewhere that if you freeze your Water bottles that would help with sipping.

I bought tupperware "sippy cup" lids and then special ordered the 16 ounce bell tumblers ( they are discontinued now, but the other sizes are still available) and will be using those. They, on my mind anyway are adult versions of sippy cups that I thought better than the ones at the store with bunnies and bears!

And here I was debating over the Little Mermaid or Lightening McQueen.

I know it may sound weird, but those Water bottles with the softer plastic screw on tops such as.. uh oh forgot what they are called, they have a white screw on top, no spout, and their picture has like a mountain, a lake maybe, i think the name is two words... crystal something... im not sure. But ANYWAY, try taking a pen and piercing a hole or two in the top. Sitting on your desk it looks like a normal Water bottle and when you drink out of it it looks normal unless someone is really close to you. You may have to suck kinda hard out of it... 3 holes is best and you can't really see the holes just glancing at it.
kiz 1 Posted November 20, 2009 babiegirl, your post reminded me of my son's Water bottle. He loves it. It's made by Camelbak, and has the spout like the original Camelbak. better-bottle-75L - CamelBak.com
