does anyone eat bread or pasta?

Recommended Posts

My doctor also says no carbonation. I didn't AT ALL for the first year, but last New Years took three sips of some champagne. NEVER AGAIN. I thought I was going to die. So he was right. It was very painful.

As far as the bread and Pasta, he told me I could eat it occasionally, but not on a regular basis, and if I did eat it, it had to be 100% whole wheat or whole grain. I don't have any problem if the bread is grainy, but if it's white it DOES get stuck. It turns into a nasty glue ball. Remember rolling the middle of white bread into balls when you were a kid? It does just that in your stomach, and it will not pass your stoma.....the grainy bread has texture at least breaks up and passes through. I've also been told NOT to eat white rice, EVER, only brown, and never to eat white potatoes only sweet. Not only is the nutrition greater, the texture is better, and it also has something to do with the glycemic index of the food. Your body doesn't turn it to pure sugar, and it takes longer for the body to process it. this keeps your blood sugar stable. It's very interesting. Read up on it.

I can't eat cheap white bread, it's just not worth the effort it takes to not get stuck. The only bread I eat anymore is the crusty sourdough stuff from a bakery, and only once in a while. I tend to stay away from Pasta as well, but I'll eat some pizza every now and then. I don't drink much soda, but I will drink some beer on the occasional weekend with friends. I can drink maybe 5 or 6 and I'll drink pretty slowly compared to my old self. Carbonation doesn't bother me at all for some reason.

If you're really questioning the "no carbonation" rule, do this. Open a bottle of beer or soda. Take a condom and stretch it over the top so that it completely covers the top of the bottle with no "leaks" and walk away from it. Come back in a little while and you will have a condom balloon...inflated by the carbonation. That's what it does in your pouch/stomach and it can be quite painful.

bread? Yeah, I eat bread. IF it's toasted. Or crackers (I love Kelloggs Special K Crackers!).

Pasta? No way. Every time I've tried, I get stuck. So not worth it.

Since I have had some Fluid unfilled in my band I can pretty much eat whatever I want. I don’t mind this at all. I just want to eat less of it than I once did. I really don’t feel I need to be moderated so much that I’m leaving out good healthy food from my diet.

I eat rice, except brown rice now. I grew up on rice as it was a family staple. It’s not bad for you, but if you eat too much of it, then it becomes bad.

I eat whole wheat Pasta and bread now. I’ve always ate whole wheat bread, but not the pasta. They both have good nutrition that our bodies need.

I eat healthy cereals and just about anything that will help me ensure I get as much Fiber in a day as I can. I think poor fiber gets left out of the “healthy mix” and many things that are packed with it go along for the ride.

Well, except the difference is that your body does have "leaks" in that you can burp and gas can also be absorbed. Still good to stay away from soda if you can, either too much sugar or too much artificial sweetener.

Just like bread, chicken, Pasta, caffeine, alcohol, etc, carbonation is OK for some and unpleasant for others. Some docs tell you to avoid these things and some don't. I drink beer most weekends and never had any issue with it, my doc says no problem as long as I understand those are calories. My opinion is to always follow the advice of the guy you will turn to if you have a problem.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
