finished pre-surgery at hospital

Recommended Posts

I had my pre-surgical testing yesterday.. and also sat with the RN who is bariatric nurse coordinator. It took all day.. but VERY informative. we had a little group meeting prior to the actual testing part. The nurse went over EVERYTHING there is to know about what to expect. The hospital is beautiful and cozy. I found out that i will be starting on mushies right away.. so no liquid period.. woohoo. i get to have liquid mashed potatoe for thanksgiving. lol. I will also be staying overnight... but woken up every 2 hrs to walk and prevent blood clots...in addition to the heparin shot every 8 hrs or so.. jeez. better safe than sorry. huh?

no liquids. only the day before surgery.. yea, i was surprised and happy to find out we start on mushies right away. i was told the morning after surgery they give us cream of wheat. it is definitely true that every dr is different. i also found out my dr gives a fill at the time of surgery.. which not many dr's do.. my surgery is on 11/23 9 days!!!! can't wait!

Yumm, cream of wheat :wink2: I was just looking at my book (yes my doc gives you a 200 pg binder on the dos and don'ts of surgery. I will be doing an overnight stay again) He does required a liquid diet pre-op though.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
