What was your doctors diet?

Recommended Posts

I havn't heard back from my doctor yet and I still dont know what diet i will be on post op. I am being banded next Thursday the 19th Nov, very excited and very nervous... not about the op, more about the healing and dieting for the first 6 weeks after. I was hoping some of you could share the various diets you were given and help me to prepare. All advice and information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks ALL

My doctor game me a semi-liquid diet to do two weeks before surgery. Basically, it boiled down to slim fast shakes for Breakfast and lunch and then a reasonable dinner. The women's plan restricted calorie intake to 1000, and the guys were given 1200.

My doctor wanted his patients to lose weight before the surgery in part to demonstrate they were serious about the procedure, but mostly to shrink the fat around the liver. If your liver is too fatty, the surgery cannot be performed laparoscopically and they might have to cut you open. My doctor told us a story about a guy who lost something like 30 pounds before his surgery, but then splurged the weekend right before his surgery on two big lobsters. Even though he'd lost a lot of weight, the doctor still couldn't perform the procedure laparoscopically because of the fat he had recently consumed and its affect on his liver.

So yeah...long answer I guess! I guess it all depends on your doctor.

My doctor also had me on a semi liquid diet 2 weeks prior to surgery. I was able to have a slim fast high Protein for Breakfast and lunch then a lean cuisine for dinner. These were extras if I was really hungry 1 sugar free popsicle and 1 sugar free Jello and 1 fat free yogurt. I would call your doctor tomorrow and find out. That diet is really important. Good Luck!!

In Australia, the band is really promoted as tool to help you live a normal life.

therefore, there is the standard post op diet, liquids to mushies to solids and that is strict, and we have the pre op thing too.

but long term, we dont have anything like the rules you guys have. Half a cup as a portion is mentioned, but only as a sort of guide, not gospel and we are encouraged to eat healthily, from all food groups, but also to be normal people who share celebtration meals, eat on the run, sometimes eat fast food or enjoy some chocolate with an evening movie.

Its everything in moderation, and most defnitely not a diet with rules like Protein first, counting grams of carbs etc.

Thanks Jachut,

Contrary to what my profile may say (because it didnt give me many options) i am in Oz too, Melbourne in fact.

Your words are very encouraging and brught a smile to my very weiry face with less than a week until my op.

I am really worried about the first few weeks after op, concerned that i wont be able to function as normal for weeks because i wont be eating and il be recovering etc. Just started my DREAM JOB and not wanting to be useless for a month so im quite nervous at the moment.

I am hoping mushies start after a week... how long before you could eat mushies?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
