k-statearmywife 6 Posted November 12, 2009 First off, I don't want any lectures about how important it is to stick to my surgeons recommended post-op diet. I am 1 week post-op and have been slowly introducing soft foods into my diet with complete success. With that being said, how am I supposed to know if something doesn't sit well with me, or if I am full, etc.? I've eaten creamy Soups, mushy tuna, Jello, hot Cereal, etc., nothing that I have to crunch, cut, or chew very much (or at all), and I havn't had an adverse reaction to anything! I do however get adverse reactions when I drink a protien shake (immediate gas, which did NOT happen on my pre-op diet). I do feel full after about 1/2 cup of mushies, but not like I used to feel full. Someone give me some advice on what is supposed to happen if I eat foods to soon, NO LECTURES PLEASE! pipedoc 0 Posted November 12, 2009 the way the Doc explained it to me was that your band can slip down farther on the stomach requiring another surgery to replace or reposition it. From what he told me, the stomach has not gotten used to the band being there that soon and you are able to eat more than you should at this point thereby pushing up some of the lower stomach up through the band to the new stomach area making it larger than it is supposed to be, Or so he said. I started eating a few days early, but that was after 3 weeks of full liquids and 5 days of mushies, dont think I had a problem but its too early to know for sure. good luck PD
elcee 3,342 Posted November 12, 2009 When you eat foods that need to be chewed your stomach churns to digest them. This churning of the stomach can cause the band to slip. A period of time is required for the band to settle into place, stitches to heal etc which is why the Dr's prescribe liquid and mushy diets post op. So there you have it - in a nutshell - no lectures!
Jachut 487 Posted November 12, 2009 You arent giving your band a chance to heal. Just because you dont vomit, doenst mean you're not doing damage. The stomach needs to be given the chance to form scar tissue around the band so that its solidly held in place - the reason for the liquid diet to mushies diet. The first you might know of how detrimental your actions are is when your band slips in say, six months or a year's time.

I am enjoying the pound a day loss jump start... dr said full liquids this week. puree next, I would love to have some cottage cheese, yogurt etc However I am not really hungry if I keep up on my liquids. I am rationalizing head hunger and true hunger... when I think about it I am not truely hungry and it is a struggle to want to put down a Protein shake, half in the am and half in the afternoon and my chewable supplements. I havent even had to distract myself with closet cleaning... I thought I would have gotten it done on preop diet LOL
