Did you stop losing weight after 2 weeks postop?

Hi all:

I guess we are in the same boat...I was banded 10/29...had my checkup today and 16 # down....doc will not do fill until Dec. 8 at which time he told me to keep walking and not to do any hard exercises...let my abdomen heal...he said that an aggressive wgt loss is 2 # a week and to only eat 700 cal/day....my stomach is grumbling continually...is that normal? I am starting mushies, but again dr. said that it has to fit into a spoon and consist of baby food....UGH I need some texture, I am going to try some tuna and some cottage cheese to see if it will hold of the grumbles...my father said this stage is normal...he has lost 98# with his band....we are all in this together and this board is monumental for my mental:wink2:

Please do keep us updated. Sometimes people think you must starve to lose, but many times it is the opposite.

I promise, I will update! I am really hoping that it works! It's hard though, I feel like I'm eating a lot! I guess even a little is a lot after, what, 3 weeks of liquids?? But comparing it to my plate before....WOW! I am eating off a tea saucer.

I'm in the same boat as you are. I lost 13 lbs on the two-week pre-op liquid diet. I was banded on 10/8, and have lost 15 lbs post op (and that was all basically in my first two-weeks post op).

It's a little discouraging. Like Daphne999 I've consumed more calories on regular "diets" in the past and dropped weight quicker than I am now. I'm on regular food, but am really watching it: Not consuming more than 700-800 cal per day, very low fat, low carb, high Protein. I'm not exercising much, though. Oh yeah, and the stomach growling? Mine growls like crazy. I've literally had growls that lasted like seven seconds. Brrrrrrrrrrrwooorrrruuuuuugh.

I'm not going to sweat it. We all got into this for the long-haul!

Wow.. I am right there with everyone and in fact I just wrote about this on my blog today..

So glad you guys have validated what I suspected.

I went through the same thing... 20 pounds in the first 2 weeks and then NOTHING. It's NORMAL. your body can go into freak out mode on you and wants to level itself off to make sure you won't keep starving it. The key for me was to keep working up to more calories, more Protein and LOTS OF Water. By the end of week 4 I had lost another 3 pounds and I had eaten more food that week than in some of the previous 2 weeks combined.

I keep telling myself the first 6 weeks is about HEALING, but I know what you mean for the first time in my life I was LOVING getting on the scale everyday. Then I took a week off the scale and refound my sanity. Besides, on how many other diets have you lost that much in such a short period of time? It'll pick up again, but you do need to be feeding yourself more if you can.

Well.....it happened!! I didn't have to send my scale in for repairs!! It's no longer stuck! After 3 days of increasing my calories to around 1200 I am down 1 pound! 214! This is what I weighed on my wedding day! (ok, so I'm not so proud of that, but I haven't seen this number since 1999!)

It may not work for everyone but I think my body really needed me to take in more! I must be closer to my caveman roots than I thought!:thumbup:

hi, I noticed when I started pureed foods @ weeks post op, my weight loss stalled. I was losing and gaining the same 3 # for 3 weeks. I kept adjusting my calories to find the amount I needed to lose weight. I eat about 900-1000 and lose regularly, everyone's amt is different. I walk 6 times a week and started the jillian michaels 30 day shred when I was on full exercise.

Week 2 I gained 3 pounds...after being down 16 the first week. I was only getting about 400-600 calories a day. After reading many posts here I upped my calories to about 800-1000 in any given day and the weight started to come back off. Week 3 and 1 day today and down 20 pounds since surgery. Our metabolism is a fickle thing.

I was banded Oct. 26. I lost about 15 pounds in the first couple of weeks, but nothing since. I work out every day, two days with a trainer. Still nothing. I was kind of depressed until I read some of your posts. Thanks. Now I see that this is pretty normal. It makes me feel better. I think the advice about the inches makes sense. I am wearing jeans I haven't worn in a long time. Thanks again for making me feel better.

Is there room for one more here? I was just crying tonight because I was so ashamed of myself. I feel like I'm eating way too much. I saw my Dr a week and a half ago and he said I was in starvation mode- about 400 calories a day and feeling like I was going to faint just sitting at my desk in the afternoon. He said to stay off the scale, eat more and drink my Water and see him on two weeks. I see him this Thursday but I feel like I've gained a ton. I haven't weighed myself but I guess I'm in bandster hell because I eat and no longer have a feeling of being full for hours like I used to. I used to have a Protein Shake for Breakfast, skip lunch because I didn't even think of it (which the Dr gave me a good lecture on) and I would have like 1/2 cup of pureed sweet potato for dinner. Two weeks later...I have a Protein shake for breakfast (around 6 am), one of those mini to go cups of light cottage cheese at around 10am, 1/2 cup tuna salad or chicken salad for lunch, almost a cup of applesauce for a snack in the afternoon and 1/2 cup ground chicken, 1/2 cup pureed veggie and I still have room for some pastina for dinner! I had an early dinner tonight- about 4pm and just had some eggbeaters b/c my stomach was growling so much! I feel like I'm eating much healthier choices than I used to- in fact I know I am, but I feel so angry with myself because I'm eating so much more than I did a few weeks ago and I just don't feel like I'm losing anymore. Here I go again, here come the waterworks. I'm so afraid I'm going to fail at this too. Anyway, thank you for this thread. I don't feel so alone and that is really a big help. I think tracking what I eat is a very good suggestion. Maybe if I see the numbers I'll see just how many calories I'm consuming and it will at least be something to bring with me to my Dr. appointment on Thursday.

I was lucky - only had 1 week in my weight loss phase where I didn't lose anything..

I kept my calories between 800 - 1200 and varied them daily.

If you are not eating enough it will show up on the scales (not losing)

You must have your 3 meals and a couple healthy Snacks

This isn't about deprivation - It's about learning to eat healthy

While you are in bandster hell - eat extra veggies at nite - fine low calorie foods to fill you up til you get that fill..

And watch out for slider foods - if you are on regular food alway eat your (hard/meat) Protein 1st as it really does help fill you up

Try not to drink your meals - cuz even when you get to your sweet spot - liquids slide right on thru and you will be hungry within an hour..

Wow, what a welcome home mat this post is! I am so in the same boat. I was banded on 9/22 and I have only lost 16 pounds but I have lost inches. I am eating a lot for a band, but not nearly was I was eating and way less carbs. This last week, my hunger has gone WAY up because I have been hitting the weights really hard and getting back to a 3O-45 minute cardio and 30 minute heavy weight work out. No sodas, no booze and lots of chicken. I have .5 cc of a fill and it doesn't feel like ANYTHING so I am going in for another fill. What is strange is I feel so normal. Nothing getting stuck, not feeling of full uncomfortableness, no vomiting, and just total comfort. I started out at 242 and now I am at 228. Its such a long drawn out battle you know? Sorry for the long post, but I feel amongst friends and this helps so much!

I am almost 3 weeks post op and now I am not losing any weight. I gained 2 lbs thru the week but am still down 20 since my surgery. I finally lost those 2 lbs again... I am barely eating maybe 300 calories a day. I am not hungry at all and actually forget to eat. I am just wondering when I will start losing again. I am afraid they wont give me a fill since I am not hungry and barely eating anything... Uggh has this happened to anyone else?

You should be getting more calories than that, but I wanted to share something I posted on Obesityhelp.

Hi all,

Right after surgery, I came on here and complained that I hadn't been losing anything and was thinking I would be one who the band just didn't work for for whatever reason. In the beginning I did lose slow, but as I started getting my fills and doing the "dieting" and exercising that is required with this thing, I am finally seeing results and it feels GREAT!! I went in for my 5th fill on November 2. At the doctor's office I weighed 230;my scale said 227. This morning I got on my scale, 11 days after my fill, and I am down to 221.8! Wow!!! That's 6 pounds in 11 days.

I am posting this because I know there are several newly banded people, who, like me, were thinking that the weight should fall off magically after having the band placed and should come off with doing only liquids and significantly reduced caloric intake. I just wanted to share with you guys who are new that give this thing some time and you will see some results. I have been diligently watching my diet (even through the hunger, and even through some slip-ups from time to time),exercising and drinking lots of fluids. Today, as of this morning, I am down 27 pounds since surgery day of 07/07/2009! Granted I thought it would be more by this time, but I can tell you I am on cloud 9! I am almost at the 30-pound mark!! I am down total of 53.2 since March (the start of my 3-month supervised diet) and that is a great feeling.

I have a lot more to go, but dang it that's 53 pounds I will NEVER, EVER see again!

I remember reading posts like this in the beginning and just not believing I would be one of the ones who loses weight with this thing. But, this WILL work for you. I'm not sayin' it isn't a lot of work because it is. But do what you are supposed to and you will see results.

Deekel: it sound like you are doing great. You are making healthy choices, although, watch out for the Pasta after you get restriction. It can be tricky. I only eat whole wheat spaghetti now. You will probably see results on the scale by the time you go back to the doctor. To be honest, it sounds like you are eating amounts you will be for a while. The amounts of food probably won't change from what you are eating now, but with restriction, it will keep you full for longer.

sfchick: if you are exercising hard, make sure you calories are reflecting that. If you don't eat enough, your body will hold onto every bit you put in. Also, take a look at the amounts of food you are eating and how long it keeps you satisfied to determine if you need a fill. Don't think just because you feel normal, and not stuck, that you need to add more. It sounds like you are on the path to being a very successful bandster. Keep up the exercising!:wink2:

Thanks Crzytchr. I feel so silly for crying last night.:wink2: I've lost more weight already than I could have on my own. Guess it was just time for a pity party. I love that I can log on here and someone else is either feeling the way I am or has felt the way I do and has gotten past it. You all rock!!

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
