Surgeon not having me stay overnight...Should I be worried?

Recommended Posts

My surgeon performs gastric banding as an outpatient procedure meaning I will not be staying in a hospital overnight. Anyone else being done same day outpatient?

I'm concerned b/c I keep reading about how everyone is having surgery and staying overnight.

o um, I thought most people didn't stay overnight? I got to the hospital at 7:35am, but there were like 3 people in front of me, so I had the surgery at 11, and I'm pretty sure I was done 30 minutes later. They waited for me to wake up, told me to walk, I ended up walking really easily and they were impressed and I think I was out by like 2 or 3 sooo...I wouldn't worry about it. By the way it's been a year and 3 months since my surgery, so nothing went wrong...

I was outpatient. I had no problems whatsoever, and I was very happy to be going home. The doctor won't let you leave if you're having problems. I had to be able to drink, pass urine, they ran an upper GI and probably some other things that I've forgotten. When you get home, just be sure you follow all of your doctor's instructions, and don't hesitate to call if something isn't right.

Unless there is some type of complication (hernia repair maybe?), I think this is usually an outpatient procedure. I was admitted at 5:45 a.m. and discharged at 2 p.m.

OK. I'm beginning to feel much better about this being an outpatient procedure. Thank you all for your comments.

I wish mine was outpatient. I'm young with no health problems and my Dr was going to send me home the same day, but my insurance said they would pay for the overnight stay. So, the Dr changed his mind and now I have to stay. Booooo! I'd much rather be miserable and in pain from the comfort of my own home!

I was last surgery of the day 7.30pm. They found a hernia and fixed that as well. Came out of anaesthetic around 9.30pm, only thing they did was monitor me and give me some pain pills. I was up doing laps of the corridors at 3am, and couldnt wait to get home. I had really bad shoulder pain... REALLY BAD... but thats life you put up with it. Doctor checked in at 7.30am and I was home by 10am - had to wait for a lift from sister.

Day surgery would be my choice if doing it again.

my surgeon seems to make it our choice (beforehand) with him having the ultimate say after surgery. i have requested to go home the same day. i rather be in the comfort of my own home by myself.

I'll be outpatient as well. I asked my surgeon how long the whole procedure would take and he said, "30 minutes". He also said that he once did in 27 minutes, but that it's usually more like 30 because he likes to take his time and do it right. Then I asked him how much time I needed to take off work. And he said "what time?... Iwe can schedule you for the surgery on a Friday and you can go back to work on Monday.... unless you want some time off and then I can write you a note."

Does this sound about right to everyone.... or is my guy a little off?

It all depends on the kind of job you have. I had surgery on Monday and on Thrusday I catered a party - I SHOULD NOT HAVE - but I was pre commited. Have it on a friday and take the whole following week off! You will be sore for a couple of days in the port area!

I would have a week off if I were you - I actually needed two, but he said that was because of hernia.

Its not so much pain, but discomfort, plus having to adjust to the fact that you have Clear liquids only, and the hunger is worse than when on Optifast. This is major surgery - and any anaesthetic takes time to get over. Yes you CAN go to work - but I don't think you may WANT to go to work... just my opinion.

I am curious to read everyone elses responses - but ultimately its your decision and you will make the right one for you.

well I had no pain at all, didn't take any pain pills. Only issue was I needed help getting up and down and I tried not to bend much. Other than that it was great, but I took 2 weeks off from work because I'm a pizza delivery driver and that's a lot of movement and getting in and out of the car. (I'm in college, I had the surgery during summer)

My insurance requires me to stay overnight. I would prefer to go home but that will not be an option for me. Good Luck!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
