How fast?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I had my surgery 3 weeks ago today, and so far, have lost 15 lbs. Most of that was when I was just on fluids only but seems I'm stuck now. Was just wondering how fast most lose it. Am I being impatient?

Hey Taryn, I had surgery on 10-9 and I'm in the same place. From what I've read on here, its normal to stop losing and even gain a little btween weeks 2 and 4, until you get your first fill, then things will hopefully pick up. They call this time "bandster hell" because you are getting hungry and aren't as satisfied with small portions. Your band really isn't helping you much, its all willpower from now until you get a fill!

Hi Angie,

Is nice to know I'm not alone on this. Looks like you're really doing well so far. It's just hard to not be losing when all I eat is a hard boiled egg for a meal lol. I wish I could exercise more but I have MS and can only do so much. Am anxious to have my first fill.

Don't worry about how fast you lose. Work on figuring out yourself. If you don't know why your overeating and change your thoughts about food not even the band will help you. Trust me I know. After over 3yrs. of having the band the one thing I have figured out is the key to long term success is not how fast you lose, but totally changing your lifestyle. Exercise is key. I have become lax with everything lately and have now gained back 20lbs. I never really worked on my head, just my body. I hope I can get it under control before it gets out of control again. Please don't think I'm preaching, I just have had the time to live and learn. By the way your doing GREAT!

yeah don't stress about it. I didn't loose any weight for about a month soon after surgery. Your body goes into starvation mode and it tries to hold on to all of your weight. And because you haven't had a fill yet you probably don't have too much restriction. As soon as you get some restriction you will loose again. It took me about 2 fills to really get restriciton.

Thank you everyone for your encouragement. Still only 15lbs in over 3 weeks is still driving me crazy, but am trying to be patient. I have 2 more weeks til my first fill and am starting to get so hungry between meals. By the way, you have a great blog Sarah.

Be patient it will take time. I think that whenever I stop eating or restrict eating my brain thinks that I should be loosing a lot of weight. However, as I have found the lap-band weight loss process gradual and takes time. So I have to change my thinking and be happy that I am no longer gaining weight but loosing instead. Good Luck, try a support group.:tongue2:

I'm 14 months post op and have lost almost 75lbs. It takes time. Exercise and eat right and you'll notice results. Don't get so hung up on the "number" but how your clothes feel.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
