Do you or have you ever used Motrin, Ibuprofen, etc, while banded?

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I am having a gynecological biopsy done on Friday and my gyn suggested using Motrin beforehand to help ease the pain. I know we aren't "allowed" these types of drugs, but has anyone used them while banded? I only plan on using it the one time before the biopsy. Just wanted to hear thoughts.

I use liquid or children's chewable Motrin when I get a headache or for pain. Not very often, but take with food and you should be fine. It's my understanding that physicians are concerned about them sitting in your stomach, but if they are chewed or in liquid form, they should not "sit" very long. Hope this helps!

Me too! I was given the go ahead at 6 months to re-start my prophylactic 81 mg aspirin but no other NSAIDS.

I've taken Advil a couple of times, for arthritis pain, with no adverse effects. I eat a bit of cheese, then take the meds, but always wash it down with a full glass of Water, and take a nexium with it. I don't know if it is safe or not, and I don't plan to do it often, but hey, I gotta walk.

I use it all. I wasn't ever told that I couldn't just when I was first banded. I do however like to take the liquid gel Aleve or Advil as they "melt" faster. But I haven't had any problems.

I spoke to my doctor about infrequent use of Motrin for menstrual pain and/or pain at my last visit.

He told me that they (doctors) believe that the new bands (lapband AP) are better and not as affected by NSAID use, but as of yet the data is not there to support it so he can't say it is ok to do. He said that if I do take it to take a Pepcid along with it. He said a couple of times a month max would be ok if I had to. I asked him if I would be better off taking liquid or gel tabs and he said that it wouldn't matter it is about what happens once the NSAID is in the bloodstream, which surprised me.

Anyway.. that is what my doctor said! So, I am not planning on taking it, but if I need to once a month or so, I will.

I'm curious about what the new data will say though... I guess the newer bands are better, makes me wonder what else would be better too?

My Doctor said it's fine to use occasionally. I have done so with no problem.

I used a few (2 200 at a time) for a bad tooth infection and didn't feel any problems, I stopped after a few days when the antibiotics kicked in.

If you are worried, maybe ring you surgeon and ask him his opinion on it, honestly his is the best to go on because he would know more about the band

I was regularly taking Aleve prior to surgery. My doctor said I could not take at all. He said it was "a guaranteed ulcer". He also said I could bet my last dollar on getting one if I took it anyway. Needlessly to say, Aleve is not in my meds cabinet anymore.

On my pre-op paperwork the only meds I listed were all NSAIDS, Aleve, ibuprophen for frequent headaches and other pain related to fibromyalgia. I take no Rx meds. Every time I have gone in for a fill they have me fill out a paper with a few questions on it and one of the questions is what kind of medication do you take. I always write ibuprophen. I can not take pill form at this point, so I use a double dose of Jr. strength chewable or liquid. I will have to ask about it at my next visit.

My doc is a Center for Excellence surgeon and he says it's ok to take any as long as you do not take it in excess. For a headache or a pain is fine.. and I'm sure you aren't popping pills all day long. I wouldn't worry about it. Good luck!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
