Questions about Subway Post Op!

Recommended Posts

Hey I am along way from having real food as I was just banded last week but I love Subway and it has always been a healthier alternative to fast food. I am curious to those with the band have you been able to tolerate it at all? Any special tricks you do when ordering? I know there is a good chance I cant eat bread so what about the wraps they have? Thanks any help is much appreciated!!

I'm actually very interested in some of the answers you get to this question. I am a bread fanatic and I love subway, so this will be very helpful to me.

I am thinking that they can toast it like a grinder type sandwich, it may be okay. I know Quizzno's and other sandwich places do it and my understanding is we can tolerate bread if it's toasted. Here's to hoping!!

There is absolutely no way I can eat the bread. I have read of other bandsters who are able to tolerate the wrap but I don't think I can.

I have eaten a small Del Taco burrito successfully but I peel the excess tortilla off it before I eat it. Even then I struggle and it takes me forever to eat it.

If you really want to eat on the cheap (and you're with a close friend), and you don't want the bread - order one sub with extra meat, it costs next to nothing, and ask for extra spinach (grrr to the Subways that only have iceberg lettuce). You can have a nice little meal for about a dollar..lol

I can still eat bread, but with something like a sub, I have to tread carefully. I take very small bites if I take a whole bite or more normal bites with only one side of the bread at a time. I can eat about a 4 inch sub this way. I order the whole grain or whole wheat, whichever has the highest Fiber and use just a smidgen of the no fat dressing. That's mostly because I think they pour too much on if you don't ask them to go easy on it.

On Biggest Looser, I saw Shay order a Subway sub, and she asked them to shallow out the center portion out of her bread. I thought that was a great idea.

I've never tried the wraps, but I think I'd have to be careful with those as well. If I order a small black bean/chicken soft taco, I eat the filling, and only a little of the wrap.

I am just like Happy to lose! No way. Bread/tortillas are out of the question at this point. I took a bite of my daughters burro on Sunday, and it went down, but very slowly. It is so wierd the way it feels. Stuck, dry, sideways.

It is almost as if though your esophagus rejects it! Very strange.

Not trying to preach, as i am the begining of my weight loss journey....but.... bread/tortillas=weight gain. Try and stay away from those types of foods.

When you are able to eat real food.. stick to Proteins and green veggies. I love turkey burger patties with a slice of mozz/cheese, and broccoli.

Subway and I do not get along  I had the chicken terraki (i know i spelled that wrong) sub, and it made me so sick i had to get an unfill

My doctor said it was the chicken and the bread, and that was with chewing it really really well.

Be very careful when branching out into 'new' foods. I wish you luck!!

I am with you! Early on I am being very diligent. I figure I have plenty of time "later" on to cheat!

Up until my 3rd fill I was still eating a 6" - I just had it toasted twice so that it was eatable, in saying that - My band has been strange with me, things I should be able to eat I can't and things I shouldn't be able to eat I can, it's annoying and confusing. With subway just make sure you eat it slow and chew heaps, for me even though I could eat the entire 6" about 3 bites before I was finished I'd suddenly get really full really quick - Just ask the people to toast it twice so it's really crunchy

I love the salads!!! They are so yummy. I am about 7 weeks out from surgery with a 10cc band with 4cc's inside. I haven't tried the bread yet. Good Luck!

Thanks for those who have posted so far! I understand that bread equals weight gain but many fit people eat it in moderation so I was asking for this info once I hit that stage where I am at goal and wanting to just maintain. Again thanks everyone!

I eat subway at least 3 times a week and i have been banded for almost 6 months. I can't eat their regular bread but i do get all my subs on their flatbread. They don't have wraps anymore they replaced it with the flatbread. I have a ham with cheese and lettuce on flatbread it is 360 calories which is perfect and i sometimes can eat it all but most of the time not. I weighed it once and it only weighed 7 oz which is less then a cup. But the only thing i get on it is lettuce so it isn't very big.

I've had subway once since my surgery on 8/11. I had them make my favorite sandwich into a salad. I have not been able to tolerate soft breads since banding. Sometimes I can do toasted bread.

I personally have started looking at breads as a "filler". Much the same as the stuff in dog food:thumbdown:. I know that is a yucky thing to picture but in my mind they are the same lol. I would rather fill up on something super yummy like extra meat and cheese as to have the bread. I take it off of everything and I avoid sandwhiches if possible. Plus it takes forever to get the bread able to eat. I have a really hard time with tortillas and I think lots of bandsters do so just use caution. Bread is the same way... it gets doughy so it is hard to pass through the band. Be careful and your body(band) will let you know if you can have it or not. You are thinking in the right direction of healthier and that is what matters now!!! Good luck and keep having those positive thoughts:thumbup:

Well I have yet to try Subway but I love it. I have been banded since 7/29 & up until my last fill 3 weeks ago I could still pretty much eat antyhing. My last fill has made it where I have a really hard time eating anything at all unless it is Mushy. I have been eating a lot of chicken but to eat just one unbreaded tender it takes me about 20 minutes b/c I have to take really small bites & chew very very well before I swallow. I don't think I could even eat the bread right now. I might could eat a salad but I don't like spending $6.00 on something that I am only going to eat a little bit of. Good Luck and you will just have to try different things out & see how they fit with you b/c everyone is different.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
