sandi1011 0 Posted November 3, 2009 I had surgery 6 months ago. I was addicted to diet soda. Did not drink any, but have just this week started drinking it again. Has not caused me any problems..........is there problems connected with it and what are they? Thanks
Erin Marie 0 Posted November 3, 2009 My surgeon explained that it was the carbonation. It creates gas in your pouch that can aid in causing complications down the road. It's also excess calories and artificial sweetners that you're better off without. If you're missing flavor, I would recommend Crystal Light. The peach tea is quite delicious and I find that I only need to use half a pack to get my hit of flavor!
Astrasmom 1 Posted November 3, 2009 Yes my doctor said that it was from the carbonation and it causes problems. I was very addicted to diet soda. I have now found that Crytal Light is really good. I have all the flavors and drink it all of the time. Diet soda also is loaded with Sodium.
happy2lose 0 Posted November 3, 2009 I just saw my surgeon on Friday for my 6 month check-up. He said no carbonation ever! I have complete faith and trust in his knowledge and expertise. He has done over 2,000 lapbands. I asked him because I have read where some bandsters are allowed to have carbonation after one year. Guess I can't! Sorry! kimaly 57 Posted November 3, 2009 I'm over a year out and every now and then I will have a coke zero, only the 8oz one and I'll sip on it for a couple of days but before I do I shake it up good and let it sit then open it wait awhile and baby sip it. not saying it's a good idea just telling ya what I do. NoName-AZ 0 Posted November 3, 2009 Dont do it! It is empty calories., and the carbonation is not good for your pouch. Could cause slippage. Be careful!

BillOh 13 Posted November 4, 2009 Dont do it! It is empty calories., and the carbonation is not good for your pouch. Could cause slippage. Be careful! Like every other food, eat/drink slowly. If you don't try to gulp one down like Mean Joe Greene, you are not going to create slippage. I don't drink more than one a week, but I enjoy a Pepsi max once in awhile, or Coke Zero. JoJo1 0 Posted November 4, 2009 If you pour it over ice and don't use a straw, you can handle one once in a while. Studies show that people who use a lot of Diet Soda weigh more than other people, so the key is moderation, and sipping is a very good idea. I found I could not even drink Water with a straw. Who would have thunk it?
bella5425 0 Posted November 5, 2009 i am also 6 months out and i was a serious soda addict but i invested too much money to run the risk of damaging my band by going back to it. the carbonation can cause the band to slip, the calories are empty - there is no point to it. i have my days where i miss it but ultimately, i want all of my health to change, internal and external. i've lost 80 pounds and haven't had soda or carbonated drinks of any kind. i wouldn't do it at all. just my 2 cents. take care
elcee 3,341 Posted November 5, 2009 I asked my fill Dr and she said it is fine so long as it doesn't cause me any discomfort. Some people apparently can't handle it but if it's not uncomfortable then its fine. I have one occaisonally when I am out. Most restaurants offer little other than Water that is low cal, so if I don't feel like a glass of wine I figure a diet coke is better than orange juice or something similar. Cindy82281 0 Posted November 5, 2009 I too was VERY addicted to diet soda, in fact that is the hardest thing for me not to have now. My doctors have told me the reason not to drink ANY carbonation is because it irrates your pouch, and the bubbles can actually cause your pouch to grow over time. Strangest thing I have been craving lately is a nice cold beer, but I just sip away at my crystal light :cursing: I really want to have a diet soda, or beer but I am not willing to lose everything that I have worked so hard for over the last 5 months. Be strong!!!
sandi1011 0 Posted November 5, 2009 Thanks all....I will probably just have one when I am out (about every couple of weeks).....and skip any at home.
