Time release meds?

Recommended Posts

When I went to the seminar the Dr. said something about time release pills. And no pill bigger than a straw. Do we have to get our med changed?:)

Yes, you may have to get your meds changed. Time release capsules cannot normally be broken into smaller units (so that you can swallow them easily) and so may cause you difficulty. Always check with your primary care physician regarding which, if any, of your regular meds you will be taking after the surgery. I was taken off of my diabetic meds and am only on two small high blood pressure meds now, since my intake of sugar and carb laden foods has dropped to almost nil. My blood sugar levels are well within the norms now and if I were to take any of those meds, I would probably have a very low blood sugar incident. This is a balancing act we must play to ensure that we keep all the levels where they belong. Working closely with your surgeon and your regular doc is your best plan of action.

Cent,my surgeon's nurse told me no pills, all meds crushed or liquids. My PCP told me to try crushing them all even the time released???? I tried crushing them,GROSS . I finally gave up and take them one at a time with a big sip of Water. I was banded in May and knock on wood haven't had any problem with getting stuck. I have 6.5 cc in my band. I read several posts on here from people doing the same thing with no problem. I can't advise you only tell you my experience. I am sure others have had problems with stuck meds.and can tell you about their experiences. My surgeon's nurse told me she got a capsule stuck and it was horrible. Unlike elgrad I still take all but one of my original meds. and my A1C was 7 in Oct. so I will probably have to stay on my meds awhile longer. Good luck and let us know how things turn out.

Those crushed pills are nasty tasting. My surgeon asked us to coordinate with our prescribing doctors and pharmacist to see what options were available. I brought two of my tiniest pills (Mirapex and Allegra) and the surgeon said okay to take, even one day post-op. The rest were switched to crushable or liquid.

Check with your pharmacist first -- mine was able to ID which prescriptions had options and which presented problems. Don't wait until the last minute, and if you can, get an Rx for the liquid pain meds you'll want immediately after surgery. Better to have that on hand before you even go into the hospital if you can.

Good luck!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
