Welcome! The best advice I can give you is to do your research. Since you've come here it sounds like you already have a good start on that! I know exactly what you mean about feeling 40 when you're young. I'm 27 (on Sunday anyway) but I feel like an old woman. Pain all the time, dose after dose of tylenol, always tired, etc etc you know how it is. I am having the surgery next Thursday and have done lots of research. It's best to know exactly what you're getting in to than to be suprised later on when it's too late to back out! I'm ready to be the pretty thin girl too, I've been fat all my life and it's time for a change! It's better to handle our situations now when we are young than wasting our lives and looking back with regret. I wish you luck!

Hi Mell,

My name is Mel too! I turned 28 this year and I understand you completely. I am too that woman that everyone says she has a pretty face, smile but never the whole package. I live in Georgia and the weather is meant for shorts, tanks, and swimwear. I finally have reached the point where I wear it anyway. LOL

I would tell you to do some soul searching. Decide what is best for you and you alone. Surgery is a huge step and there is a lot of factors out there.

One huge reason I went with the lap band is because I want more children and GB scares me. My babies come first and I would hate to do anything to my body that would has negative outcomes. There are several other reasons but I went with my gut (no pun intended) on my choice. Do the Same!!

If you ever want to chat, just message me. I am online everyday due to school.

Hello, I too am completely new to this. I am very short (4'11) and have been very heavy for a while. I've seen about Gastric bypass, but since I am one of those people that have really bad luck, I'm scared of that. I have just turned 50. Is it too late. I get very depressed about it. This option sounds a lot safer and reversible??

I don't think it's too late. In fact it would probably prolong your life. Only your doctor can tell you if it's safe for you though so you should make an appointment with a band doctor and/or your regular physician and get their opinions. It's never too late to do something about your health!

In my group of people getting banded, we have at least 4 that is over the age of 50. I htink a couple of them are over 60. They seem to be doing great on the shakes and exercising so far. It's never too late to do something for you. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
