I gave up on my pre op liquid diet

Recommended Posts

So yes, I gave up on my pre op liquid diet. It's NOT REQUIRED. I was planning on doing it for 2 weeks, my surgery is on November 13th.

I'm just going to do a 24 liquid diet prior to the surgery that IS REQUIRED.

Today was the 1st day doing it, and I'm about to start day 2 - and I'm going nuts. I broke down and went down to the cafeteria (I'm at work) . I needed to eat something..

I was about to kill someone if I didn't.

Ugh.:scared2::thumbup:

I hope it was YOUR Dr that told you that it wasn't required. If it was great , you are lucky.

If it wasn't your Dr that told you this and maybe something you decided from reading another Dr's requirements on this site then you need to speak to your Dr.Requirements from one Dr to another vary vastly. But always remember to follow the instructions of the one that you are paying and trusting with your surgery.

All the best.

Yeah, it was MY DOCTOR that told me that this diet was not required. I'm think I'm going to embrace it. I'm going to follow all instructions, I'm not getting surgery for nothing. I'm going to be very strict with what they told me to do.

Thank you!:scared2:

Had my surgery Oct 28. My Dr. said it was a wonderful thing that I lost my first 20 lbs prior to surgery or else he would not have performed the surgery once he saw how much fat that had accumulated on my liver. I started at 303. At surgery I was 280. It was only because of the liquid diet prior that I was still a candidate. I self imposed mine at 4 weeks prior.

I did cheat somewhat at least once a week but kept it to a Protein meal later in the day. It was hard but ohhhh how happy I am that I did it.

It seems it is much harder to get to the stomach with a fatty liver.

Good luck.

Congrats for losing those pounds prior to surgery!

I had my gallbladder out in July and I asked the surgeon what he thought of liver and he said it was a normal size, and my lap band surgeon should have no problem getting around my liver to put the band on.

I plan on going to the gym a lot before my surgery so I can lose some pounds. I'm also planning on eating healthier but not so severe as a liquid diet. I was driving to work and had the suggested Protein shakes and I kept swerving cause I was just dizzy. :frown:

I've decided that I will chose an alternitive way of losing this weight prior to the surgery.

Thank you!:scared2:

My doctor doesn't require a pre-op diet either. I kept saying that i would do one anyway to be on the safe side but each day i have buckled and ate solids. They have been healthy solids just the same... I go for my pre-op testing tomorrow and will ask if I have any restrictions or requirments. Good Luck with your journey. And DONT beat yourself up about it. As long as you know and understand the rules your doctor did give you and plan to follow those you should do fine.

Hey, I am from NC also. My doctor required a pre-op diet, but not a liquid one. Good luck and best wishes...

My pre-op diet consisted of baked/broiled chicken and fish, and all the veggies I could munch with the exception of corn, potatoes and cooked carrots. I was also to stay away from sugars (including all fruit) and fats. I could have hummus, olive oil, seasonings, avocadoes, non-fat yogurt and milk. No cheese or yogurt with fruit on the bottom. I lost 21lbs in 3 weeks and, although the diet was a little boring, I didn't feel starved. Quite the contrary. You may want to give that a go because it seemed to work. Zero Protein shakes for me... I was allergic to ALL of them!

The first two days are the hardest. After day 3 you really don't feel that hungry.

I'm on day 3 of my liquid diet, and the want for solid food has subsided, thankfully!! I can only have 3-4 shakes per day, nothing else. I am getting banded on Friday, and HAVE to stick to this. Not only because the doctor told me to, but to prove a point to myself. No pain...no gain. lOLO:wink2:

It's really interesting how different the pre- and post-op diets are for different people. I had no limitations pre-op except to eat lightly the day before. I'd been doing Weight Watchers for 7 months and was already down almost 50 lbs, but I still wanted to be sure there were no problems.

So the last few pre-op days (yikes, just last week!, I had a bottle of Boost or Ensure (not Protein shakes) for one meal because that's what I would be allowed per day post-op. I found I was not very hungry or interested in eating "the last pancake, the last ice cream," etc.

Post op is different - I'm on 2 weeks of Clear liquids + the Ensure per day. No shakes, no full liquids. At least this side is easier because you don't really want to eat much at first.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
