Over 2 Years later

Almost three years ago I consulted a surgeon in my area regarding this procedure. He told me that based on my age and lifestyle, he felt I would see immediate success but then down the road after only a short while I would regain my weight. I was 330 lbs when he and I had that conversation. I had the surgery and the band was put in. In the first few weeks I had a dramatic drop in weight being limited to liquid and blended foods etc while I healed. Taking advantage of the situation I started to get back in the gym. (Which I had a habit of from my youth, was VERY fit once).

Needless to say I am now 220 lbs, at 6 feet (Yes I am a guy), I play soccer again weekly in a competitive league and work out 5 days a week. I have been steady at this weight over a year now. I have never had a fill.

The band, for me, was a psychological device. It gave me a sense of urgency to take control of my self and not to rely on a piece of plastic. I keep the band as a reminder, as a "string around my finger" and ultimately if I ever do slip I will get that first fill and use it as a safeguard.

My point is, believe in yourself and take control of your body and mind. It was not easy for me by any means. I suffered depression, I was a drinker etc etc etc...

Take control, leap with both feet and without fear. You will feel great when your body is healthy and you will reap the rewards of that new life.

WOW you look amazing! Congrats on your weight loss.

Your post hit home for me as I am struggling with my weight. I have had the band for almost three years, one year ago i was 20 LBS. from goal then I guess I told myself I did not care anymore, boy was that a lie. my heaviest 232LBS. my lowest weight since banding 160, my current weight 182LBS.

people like you are a lifesaver for people like me, I will get to goal this year. Wishing you continued success, I comend you for not having a fill and still getting to goal! simply amazing!

I think that is a great story. Congratulations!

More proof that the success stories in this forum are as much the result of hard work and good attitude as the help behind the scenes that the lap band provides. Sounds like you are loving your new life!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
