?? About Starches/Carbs

Recommended Posts

Hello All

I had a consult and was told that I would never again be allowed to have anything with starch.... Which includes all carbs both simple and complex. How can this be healthy? One of the goals to loosing the weight and changing my lifestyle is so that I can become more active. With a no/low carb diet how am I going to be able to get out of bed, let alone go play hockey?

Thanks

Gerry

Wow, it surpirises me that you were told this. I have been told that everyone is different with what they can and can't eat. For example one person I talked to said she can't have bread, even toasted but can have rice or Pasta. Another lady told me she can't have pasta or rice at all but can have toast. From what I have heard there are some things that many people find difficult to eat such as corn or fruit with skins on them, or yes starches. But I haven't been told of anything that I will for sure never be able to have again. I am going into my band on November 17th knowing that I may never be able to eat dry meat or bread or corn or really anything, but I have not been told that I definitely won't be able to have any starches at all. If anything, I was told that I should utilize mashed potatoes during my mushies stage. Anyway, this is what I have learned... maybe your doc thinks differently, anyone else have info?

Youc an eat carbs in moderation. It is all about how tight your band is, and each individual person is different. You are supposed to eat Proteins first and vegetables as tolerated. I try to do that. I also eat Desserts. Because I love desserts. It's all about moderation. I have had no prob with my energy level.

Moderation in all things. We dont even get told Protein first here in Australia. The aim is for a completely normal diet. There's no need to cut out all carbs and starch, just dont overeat them.

I was never told that either. I was more or less just told a balanced diet (protein first, then veggies). I personally try to stay away from a lot of bad carbs (although I have a serious sweet tooth and I indulge it sometimes) but I definitely eat Beans and milk (did your doctor say no milk? there are a lot of carbs in milk but I think they're fine...plus if you drink milk or mix it with a Protein Drink its a good source of extra Protein, and Calcium, obviously), tofu, etc. You should ask your doc or nutritionist to clarify, because that doesn't sound right to me.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
