Caffeine Question

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know why my doctor (and most from what I gather) has the rule that I'm not allowed to have caffeine for at least the first 2 weeks after surgery? I need to check exactly how much time he said, I'm not sure about exactly how long.

I understand the reason for no soda, the reason for not drinking with your meals and all those sorts of rules but I haven't seen the reason why they don't want us to have caffeine. It's just something I'm curious about. Any ideas?

I mostly drink Decaf, so it wasn't something I paid a lot of attention to, but I know it was brought up several times in support group that we should limit caffeine to no more than two cups per day, but I don't remember a time frame from after surgery. From my WW days, caffeine can be a diuretic, so it makes sense not to drink it after weight loss surgery when we could be prone to dehydration. Also, for some people (at least according to the WW I attended), caffeine causes you to feel hungry. I drink regular coffee on occasion, and I don't find that it makes any difference to my hunger though.

maybe because you put milk in it there for it is no longer a clear liquid, or because of what caffine does to the metabolism... or because it dehydrates you ???????????

I switched to decafe months ago and my boobs no longer hurt... BONUS ;O)

It was explained to me that Caffeine is an irritant that can put you at higher risk for the band eroding into your stomach. I drink Decaf now.

This came up in my support group tonight and the dietitian said caffein interferes with Iron absorbtion and that is why my doctor's office says not caffeine ever. I badgered my doctor enought that he relented and said Ok one cup of caffeine a day so I went to town. After a while, I went back to decaffeine because the reals stuff was making me feel a little queasy so I switched back to Decaf. The dietitian said there was not enough acid in your pouch to handle caffeine.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
