No pre-surgery diet?

Recommended Posts

Did anyone NOT have to do a pre-surgery diet? I had my first pre-op appointment today, with another one scheduled for Thursday, and I've been told nothing about a liquid diet or anything beforehand. My surgery is scheduled for Monday. Am I the oddball here?

Nope I don't have to do a preop diet either. :cursing:

When I asked my surgeon he said he doesn't have any problems working around the liver during the surgery unless the patient is over 400 or 450 pounds. Then he has them do the pre-op diet to shrink their liver to give him some working room. I think it varies by surgeon, how overweight you are, possibly even where you are carrying the weight (i.e hips vs. stomach).

He (the surgeon) also said he used to do it for everyone years ago but hasn't for the last hundred or so surgeries he's done. I guess he does 2 or 3 of these a week. So I'm pretty comfortable following his advice.

That being said I'm still doing the Protein Drinks for 2 meals and having a minimum carb meal for the next week before surgery. With the exeption of a final beer and pizza night :cursing:

No preop diet for me either! They suggested that I lose a few pounds to shrink my liver, but I failed at that one, and it was fine. No big deal and it turns out my liver was fine once they got in there anyways. I'm glad I didn't have a preop diet, it gave me a chance to have a "last meal" before surgery!

Okay, making sure I wasn't the only one! Hopefully I'll have to fast for 12 hours pre-op, rather than 24 hours, because I have a Breakfast planned with friends Sunday morning, and I go in Monday morning!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
