Sick and cant eat solids

Recommended Posts

OK, I have been sick, nothing serious, Just seasonal stuff. Alergies and all that. I havent had a fill in 6 months.

(backround, I had poison oak for 3 months this summer and was on steroids to get rid of it. once off is when I stopped being able to eat)

I can eat about one or two bites then I am stuck. BAD And in the mornings I get stuck on Water. I am scared to take alergy medicine because if water gets stuck so will pills. I dont want to get an unfill because Before this past month I could eat a hamburger...bun and all. But I dont really know what to do.

:wink2:

Sugesstions please.

My doctor said that when you have a cold, the mucus in your body forms a plug in the stoma (stomach where the lapband is), which can make eating very difficult. He said start the day with hot liquids. Sip them to melt the plug. Afterwards, you should be fine.

Give this a try - good luck!!

That's a good point. Did the allergies start right after you got off the steroids? I had a really bad cold last week with a lot of drainage, and while I could still eat, I could definitely tell I was tighter. I'm sure a hot drink would help, if that's the case.

No one likes to get unfills, especially me. I have been fighting an unfill for a while now, and am finally going in Thursday. Maybe you just need an unfill for now, untill you heal up. Sometimes when you are sick, and you plug up, your stomach gets irratated and swells up like post surgery. If you go too long, you might end up doing permanent damage. I would call your doc and get his opinion, but try the hot liquids first to see if that helps. pineapple juice might help as well. Hot pineapple juice? Yuck!

Benadryl makes strips that melt in your mouth, I guess they make liquid too. The anti-histimine might help along with the hot liquids other suggest.

Thanks Everyone. I am trying the hot liquids today. Had Tea This morning And it did go down. I am going to stick to Soup today. Just because I dont want to risk anything I will keep up with the hot tea for a while to see if that helps.

I will have to look for the benadryl in strip form. I didnt know they made it that way. I have cold medicine...just no alergy medicine.

The alergys started about a week after I got off the steroids...but I was taking anti-itch pills for a bit after the steroids to help with getting rid of the poison oak. I had a REALLY bad case of it...and it was just not going away.

Thanks all.

At this point, my advice be to go get a small unfill. At minimum, talk to your doctor about the problems you're having. I know you don't want an unfill because you're concerned about losing good restriction, but whether it's your drainage or too big a fill, you're too restricted. Several people have said that .25cc to .5cc was all they needed. My last fill that took me to my sweet spot was only .5cc.

ok thanks for your advise.

I am just hesitant because it was not a fill that got me to this point. I was actualy too loose before I got sick. That is the reason I am hesitant. This has only been for the last month...I havent had a fill in 6 months.

I will call him and talk to him

I feel your pain. I know I'd be concerned about losing my restriction too, but the way you're eating now isn't right either. I even reread your first post, and it still didn't stick in my head that this has all been a result of your illness. I'm sorry about missing that.

From someone who used to be terribly allergic to poison ivy, my sincere condolences for your poison oak reaction. That must have been some kind of miserable. I spent more than one day in the emergency room for horrible poison ivy reactions, but I haven't had it for over 25 years, so maybe my body finally built up an immunity to it.

I wish my body would. It tool 3 shots in the but and 4 seperate pill dosages to get rid of it. And even after all that I still had bumps that itched...they were just not spreading any more.

I did the Hot Tea with...yes With lunch today and managed to eat normal. I also talked to my Dr before I went to lunch and he said he did not want to give me an UNfill because of my lack of restriction before getting sick. BUT if I could not find a way to consume calories then he would do a slight unfill. But to give myself a week with the hot liquids to see if that helped. and to try taking alergy pills WITH hot tea to see if that gets them down. So I am going to try taking pills later with hot tea.

He did say that this should be temporary and my body should equal out soon...and if it dosent we will make a plan of action for it.

Thanks for the advise I do really apreciate your words...even when I dont want to listen to them lol

That's great news about your lunch, Cerrin. It's good you're staying on top of this, and that your doctor knows that you're having some food issues right now. Good luck, and I hope your allergies clear up soon.

Steroids can rearrange your body's Fluid even after you're done with them for a while. They reduce swelling when you're on them and that swelling may increase for a while when you go off. Almost all over the counter meds are available in liquids in the kid section. I take a big dose of liquid advil in my car before I go in for a fill just to minimize any inflammation.

Be careful with any pills...I chew mine with a flintstones Vitamin (for taste) because I read about someone getting a pill stuck, lots of heaving and...long story short...band removed due to slipping and erosion! I vowed right then to NEVER swallow a whole pill....good luck

I wonder if I take some liquid advil now if it would reduce the internal swelling...I have liquid tylenol and cold medicine...and my liquid vitimin. But arround here it is hard to find liquid meds. Where did you find the liquid Advil?

Children's section of meds in any drug store! Tylenol doesnt have the same anti inflammatory effect as advil...you could crush the pills into Water just so you could take it now but the liquid of everything is good to have on hand!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
