What to tell an 8yr old

Recommended Posts

Hey, Im about to get the lap band done, sooo excited.

But I dont know what to tell my BF's 8yr old son who lives with us.

I don't want to give him the wrong impression and him and his dad joke about him being overweight (i definatly dont approve of this joking).

Any ideas from parents on what they told their children, he's a smart kid and I dont think he will be fooled with much.. hes turning 8 in november

It really depends on the kid. I really don't think he needs to know all the details. Kids tend to tell everyone else your business without understanding that there may be some people you don't want to know. If you want to tell him, keep it simple. Just say you are having a band put around your stomach so you will take off weight and leave it at that. You could just say you are having trouble with your stomach, but it will be ok pretty soon.

It was tricky explaining it to my 5 and 9 year old Nephews.

My 5 Year old nephews still hasn't learned that calling Uncle Ryan Fat in public is not a-ok, but he'll grow out of the phase, but I explained it to him that I was having a Belt put around my stomach to help me Weigh less. He was like "Oh Jeez, I hate belts, but once your thin you can climb trees and stuff right?"

LOL, I explained that if not at least I would be much better and hid and go seek and he was happy with that.

My 9 year old nephew is like a frigging computer on feet, boy is so smart, he already new and understood what the lapband was, how I have no idea, but I did help answer some of his questions.

The tricky part was when the 9 year tried to explain it to his 5 year old bro, and confused him.

 At some point the 5 year old thought I had the port on the outside of me and wanted to see it. LOL

A friend told her 8 year old daughter that Mommy was having a band around her tummy so she wouldn't be fat anymore and so she could have a big lap for her daughter to sit in. Her daughter was like "well, okay!", so my friend thought she'd said just the right things.

THEN, she heard her daughter LOUDLY tell the next door neighbor "My Mommy's got a rubber band around her tummy so she won't be fat!"

I went with I had surgery on my stomach so I have to watch what I eat. Anything else is much more information than a kid really wants or needs. Especially if you are a person who doesn't want the whole world to know.

I told my 4 year old the truth and that I could go to the zoo with him a mommy. He was super happy. He monitors my food intake better than I do.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
