I went to my nutrition class today in anticipation of my surgery on 11/3. They said that the Isopure Protein Drinks did not count as clear liquid even though they are 'clear' because they contain Protein. Apparently for 3 days after surgery, there's to be no protein.

The nutritionist didn't know why (have to say I wasn't too impressed with her). Does anyone here know why protein is banned?

.

i went to my nutrition today too. Preop I can have the Isopure, but for the first few days clean and then at 4 days or was it 5 then full liquids... Isopure is considered full liquid, why? I didn't think to ask.

It's all about the healing. The docs want your stomach to be healing, not working on digesting (even Liquid Protein has to be broken down). Also, there is probably a question of nausea.....they want to be very careful not to do anything that might trigger that. Seems like all docs have a different schedule for advancing the diet, but almost everybody has to do Clear Liquids for a time.

Im not too sure bout that one...

I drank Isopure clear protien drinks during my 1st wk & I really think I helped me drop weight faster.

I had a BMI of 31 to start & knew my loss would be slow.

Why wait?

I'd get a second opinion...

I had to do Protein Shakes first day home. All Dr's are different in their directions.

We were told no Tomato Soup even when we get to the liquids stage when we can have thin Soups. I thought perhaps because tomatoes were acidic since tomatoes were also on the list of no-no vegies later on, but no, she said it's because they're high in sugar. Then goes on to say that a small container of juice (containing 28 carbs, 26 of which were 'sugar') was ok because it was 'natural' sugar and not added. Ummm...as I said, I wasn't impressed with her.

I was given Isopure in recovery at the hospital. I had to drink a certain amount before they would let me leave. It all depends on your dr.

I'm not a big fan of the Isopure but it's better then the Protein Shakes. Isopure has 40 grams of Protein so I try to drink at least one a day. The blue raspberry and orange-banana-pineapple are the best ones.

I have found many things that seem to contradict each other since I started my Journey, even in my doctors literature. I think we need to be careful of course, but we can listen also to the little voice inside and make some decisions for ourselves.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
